hmm they might not be as fast on vista.. what version are you getting!!
It seems at the moment vista doesn't run that great on vista compared to xp!!
I know i done a frame rate test and got 4 times better in xp on my dual boot.
however i might be wrong
Hey bud, vista works awesome now for gaming very close if not better than xp, depending on version 32 bit or 64. Make sure if you intend gettin crysis you get a 64bit machine ehehe unreal. I remember last time i was lookn at older game compatabilities steam was still a little buggy. And directx 10 is the best reason to get vista. But then you need an 8800 or ati equivalent to use dx10. Any questions or whatever just ask or pm me.
Oh and the sp1 for vista comes out next month, and going by the two beta version of the sp pack the release one should be good.
any reason your moving to vista?
no offence but your better off staying with Xp for the moment... its now very stable(as stable as a version of windows can be) its primarly supported by almost everything and its due for SP3 soon anyway...
Get Windows XP64 if you want too... took me a few years to migrate from 98se to XP... 2000 and me werent worth the CDs they came on....
You may find games run slower and you may also have compatability issues...

No issues on this end with vista so far. Running 64 bit Ultimate. Crysis runs a charm!!

im biased in that it has horrible user profiles/permissions setups, eats memory, asks to many questions and ive had to many compatability issues to name...
i work in IT so im not just a general user... im sure its probably fine for the average joe...

I do i.t work to also websites video editing and alot of gaming vista runs fine and is quicker than xp for video work, also crysis dx10 is awesome. 4 gb is helpful to, but i sat with 2gb for a while.
I agree permissions are a pain, but you can alter them quite simply. Most things can be disabled.
Memory usage is no issue. Only issue i have with Vista is non approved software asking if you want it to run each time. Compatibility for the various software i use has been no issue at all.
Oh also, Outlook doesn't like to be called upon if it is open and you are sending an email from a 3rd party program.

You running any of the beta sp1 packs minux?
I am just hoping that the RAM addressing issue has been fixed so I can use all of the 4gig in mine. I know it can be worked around, the issue is we shouldn't have to with software out of the box.
You going to run the 32 bit version then i take it, there is alot less driver incompatabilities with 32 bit. Still a few issues with 64 bit drivers (more with older usb equipment).
running 32 bitt vista home premium on 2 laptops and a tower, the tower hardley gets used so i cant really comment but both laptops different brands different stat's have had stability issues from day one, freezing up all the time things wont open and various applications wont work especially older ones.
ive installed the beta version of sp1 on this laptop and now various windows functions dont work anymore and it wont allow me to uninstall it either.
i'll be installing vista later 2day i've been dling the driver updates for:
Video Card
Usb Network(wireless network)
onboard sound card
then all i have to do is backup my hard drive, the last time i tried installing vista was when when it wasn't out, hopefully this time it will be differnt
This is the reason why most IT professionals and companies are lagging on upgrading to Vista. A lot of companies are going to Linux because they are so unhappy with Vista. From an IT support perspective it's terrible. A lot of problems with network drives, support for network drivers and what they have done to the domain logins has just **** me. Most business users don't need half the crap that is included.
But it's the same as the upgrade from 2000 - XP. Most people held off because it wasn't spending heaps on extra ram and crap just to run a better looking OS.
Microsoft have also officially stated that people shouldn't hold out for Vista SP1 because it won't be the be all and end all solution for Vista's flaws.
