if its anything like the discount cards we have at my store, his mum only has the card because he was able to give it to her as he works for them. quite possible that the card has his employee number on it, so it wouldnt be theft, because it would be registered to him in the first place and just has his mums name on it to avoid situations like this happening to her

Safeway (woolworths) treat their staff like S**T. My Girlfriend works their, and they put her on all the time, she takes any shifts they cant fill because of the pressure they put on her. She requested they dont put her on for her birthday, even though its not ger rostered day anyway. Then last week the young manager rings her up and asks if she can work, and she was generally unable to work, it was the first shift she has turned down in her 18 months of working their. Next roster came out on her next shift and shes written down to work on her birthday, and when questioning it, the response she got was, "Well you wouldnt take a shift for me the otherday so thats what you deserve". Shes on her uni break and is rostered on 2 days, and has been working 6-7 days aweek, up to 15 hours a day. They are complete moorons who have no idea how to run a business, and i personelly feel like going in their and having words with them. She is telling him again tonight she is not working on her birthday, which is more then enough notice.
With the card, where my girlfriend works, they have made it a rule you must scan it yourself before all your items are scanned or your not allowed to use it at all, as it wastes time.

Rules are Rules... At maccas you get a "Number 1" card which you need photo ID on it. I guess they do it to stop people using other mates cards, which is fair, I have a few friends who work for Woolies & Coles I could just use there card when doing my food shopping to save some $$ so I guess they do it for a reason.

Its not like the company HAS to give you a card. Your lucky.

    Working on her birthday?

If she wants the job then she will work. Everybody else has to work on their birthday. When I was working at Woolworths I had to as well. They don't give a stuff if its someone's birthday or not, and to be honest I wouldn't either if I was a manager there.

youd think they could try work around it in return for 18 months of loyalty. im sure you wouldnt want your boss screwing you over because you had a genuine reason not to work when he asked. at least she wasnt faking being sick like most kids would. she tells the truth and he does that to her. you cant justify it. some managers are just ********s on power trips. im just lucky my work has a nice manager. they always do what they can if i need a day off, and they didnt even mind when i told them that for the next 12 months i could only work sundays and thats it. they do that for me and ive always helped them out in the past when i could. if the manager ever wants her to do a shift for him in the future, he ****ed that chance by making her work on her birthday as "punishment"

Its not fulltime work, her rostered days are saturday after noon, and every second sunday. Shes been working 6-7 days a week caus they dont have enough people. She requested christmas eve and new years off. She worked till 10pm christmas eve, and 11 on NYE, and had to start at 8am NYD, not many people would give up all of those days, but she did, to do them a favour.
Her birthday is on a wednesday (not her rostered day) she formally requested the day off incase they put her on, aswell as telling him verbally. The guy is on a powertrip, and thinks he can bully staff into working, because YES SHE NEEDS THIS JOB, to get through uni, and he is taking advantage of it.

In my experience with retail (and yes, at one point I was a retail manager) it's these people that want 2 shifts a week that are hardest to cater for. Not saying this about your GF, but those people don't tend to have good work ethic, think the world revolves around them and couldn't care if they didn't have a job at all.

Now I'm sorry if that's not applicable in this case, but that's what it is usually like. I don't blame management at all.

I missed the bit where he said he bought the oil?? I read the bit that said he brought some oil for his car to work...? Then he tried to use his discount card to bring the oil in? That seems strange.

No offense taken, this is not my girlfriend in anyway. Shes at Uni 4 days a week, so working 2 days was most suitable so she gets some time to herself, though they will most likely put her on anyway. She has a good work ethic, and thats what they are abusing.
I understand that they would get alot of people who only want 2 days caus their lazy, but this is clearly not the case, as she has worked 6-7 days every week on her holidays (umm word used lightly), and she hasnt even had time to go away at all and have a break.

The point is a birthday is just like any other work day. Loyalty means nothing. I have been with my current employer for 12 months and I wouldn't expect them to give me my birthday off when work has to be done.

There is the key to the whole thing - they don't have enough people. When there is a lot of work to be done, everybody has to put in. If she is part time, she should be appreciative of the extra money it brings in. Thats exactly what happened to me when I was working at Woolworths, Not enough people so everyone had to work extra.

Even though she formally and verbally requested leave, thats no guarantee that she will get it. Its just the way the workplace goes. Hell, I remember in my last job working xmas eve, new years eve and new years day even though I put in a formal leave request. I was in a full time professional position and we were short on people, as a result I was placed on call 24 hours a day.

5%, big deal...Even for a $30 container of oil it would still only save you $1.50.

Your birthday is your birthday, nothing special to the company you work for. A store like Woolworths has thousands of employees, imagine if they all wanted their birthdays off. It's just another day, get blind on the weekend.
