Triples are only ever any good on something light, like an EH or HR or a Torana. THey are thirsty anyway, but put them on something heavy and they get worse. They go well though.

The old 179 reved hard with the triples on it. The motor had 3 rebuilds in 2 seasons.

Brother rolled it once with foot flat to the floor - snapped a rod bolt. Clatter clatter clatter onto the car trailer to take it home. Crank was cactus after that. Pulled a rusty old crank out of a dead 179 - polished it up, couple of new bearings (on the cheap here) and we got the rest of the season (7 race meetings) out of the engine.

Found some more photos of the EH. Before it was made into a stockcar.

It's first race with no number.
Then high on the groove with standard engine - flat stick
Then with the triple SU's, Locked diff, shortened steering arms and a sports ally steering wheel
Street parade past the Woomera Post Office - Not bonnet scoop and rear mount radiator.

Mate it was ruff as guts. The thing went well with the tripples on it.

Note also the dent in the roof - it was rolled after a race finished - a deep rut in the large bank corner hooked the deep dish 13" front wheel and flipped.

We got the EH off the ground on the way to Blyth once. Left the hills out of Clare and it's down hill most of the way. Dad had it flat the whole way (uncle in the front seat with white knuckels) Kids in the back (with fingers crossed)in hope that it would hit the 100mph. Over the last hump and we got air
bit of a scrape from the muffler on landing and a bit of a wriggle and the EH wagon had done the magic ton. There was a great cheer form the us in the back as we bounced off the roof and screams from the ungle in the front - and he had a seat belt! That story got told many times over the years.

Now I know where I got the hoon bug from - My loonie dad

In the photos the car was seariouly out of shape after we fitted the triples. With the standard carby you could run the top of the track - BUT NOT after the triple went on. The locked diff and shoprtered steering arms made this stock car fun. It felt like you were totally sideways.

And yes the triples drank lots of fuel - we did not guzzle beer so the car could have all the fuel it wanted and make lots of HP.

    Avgas was another story

My friend had triple carbys on his LJ, that was a weapon, took me along time to match his times from years ago in my VP and he was doing the same times back then with a heap of wheelspin. It had potential to drink fuel a bit put was ok when it was tuned well, it's just that getting it tuned was a bit of a mission, he had to find an olllld school mechanic in another town that could remember triple carb tech and this was along time ago when he was looking for someone even older school :P. I came across a magizine a couple year ago with an article on tuning multiple carbies, I bought just for old times sake. It has spy pictures of Holdens secret new "LH Torana"

The triples on the EH came from a mates LJ that he ripped the front corner off (Dam gutters) - This LJ ran out of fuel 15kms short of Pt Augusta (from Woomera) so that was about 150kms. Now the LJ's dont have a large tank but 15 k's short?

When pressed for how that happened he said he got to the 150km mark real quick then sat for 2 hours while a nice bloke came back from Pt Augusta with some fuel (would that happen today?).

For the record the LJ was a very warm 202 and was very quick. The acid test was how quick you could get from Pimba to Woomera and this is where the front corner got taken off - the entry to Woomera coul not be taken quick and the stoppers on the LJ were ordinary at best. Yep tooo quick for his own good - which led to the triples sitting on the EH

Of the 3 motors or so we rebuilt for the EH I thing the triples took care of 2 of them with rods and bearings in all sorts of trouble.

They were great times racing stock cars - I miss the old stocky.
