it helps if your dad used to race and team owners owe him heaps of favours too![]()
start in karts when your about 8.. move to formula ford when your about 16 then probs overseas to race open wheelers.. come back and get a drive in the development series then if you are good enough a v8 supercar team will hopefully pick you up.
But main thing is you need to basically be a millionare to get anywhere!!!!
its a hard sport!!
I heard you just rock up to the race track with your drivers liscence and ask someone nicely.
i race sprint karts, thats a good way to get a start in motorsport, a little rich but its still a stepping stone.
you dont apply for it, you have to buy a kart, trailer, get a licence at a track and a membership.
its a bit deer, to race clubman for example, you can spend about:
1-3k on a kart
about 1500 bux on a motor.
you can use a cheap box trailer if u want but when your carrying tools, compressor, spare parts etc, a proper trailer is pretty much required...
tyres are worth 230 a set.
licence is about 300 a year.
club days are usually about $45 entry fee
membership at a club is about $80, but u do get a key and can use the track whenever you want to practice or muck around. its good if you want to go hoon, better than doing it in the car, just tow the karts and go play
lots of talent
you can get into the sport on the cheap for about 3k, but to get decent equipment you really need to spend upwards of 5k.
the grey kart is my old GP2, the orange and blue one is my new GP5

need the CAMS licence and need some sort of experience and championship wins.
Greg Murphy just went to Bathurst asking all the teams if they needed a go karting champion as a co-driver. He was paired up with Craig Lowndes the following year which they won the great race, then was given a full time drive when Lowndes left the team (for the first time) for the 1997 season.
