Well Im gonna go against popular comment here and say she was probably right. Doing 40 in a 40 zone.. a crossing guard mouths off at you.. so that tells me that you were doing the maximum speed limit approaching a crossing. You are supposed to slow down approaching crossing anyway. 40km is the speed limit, doesn't mean you have to go that fast, it would be much safer to go much slower I for one am lucky to roll over 20km per hr at my daughters school.

I agree. School pick up's I always go much slower then the actual speed limit, I also stop at the round about and at intersections when kids are waiting to cross, would much rather **** the person off behind me than see them be run over in my rear vision mirror.

40km/h is pretty fast compared to the 25km/h in SA.

Some of those mums in their 4WD's are still very deadly at 40km/h

Part of my job is doing the crossing in front of our school twice a week. It is incredible the people who think that because the sign says 40 they should make sure they do exactly 40. 40 still isn't safe when it is busy. Some do the whole hoon thing where they sit so low in their seat they wouldn't even see a kid. Not to mention how dangerous loud music and exhausts can be. Yep, all the fun stuff can be scary at a crossing.
There have been times that despite the signs and me walking onto the road that people just kept coming.
I can understand why the people who do it all the time get annoyed easy!

We lost a dog because of one like this. He got out one morning, wondering the path. Walked past her, she hit him with her stick to the point he yelped, he nipped her on retaliation. Didn't break the skin. We had witnesses give reports on what happened, signed stat decs etc. Council wouldn't listen. he was put to sleep and I lost a $1000 German Shepherd.

Eye for an eye i say...I watered her garden for her, with a nice mix of vapam. Followed a few weeks later by a dose of an unspecified agent. Haven't seen a lawn at her place in almost 3 years now.

Why is a loud exhaust and or loud music dangerous?
It doesn't change what you see. Maybe you think they can't hear these people blow their whistle? If that is the case, I always have my window up, I never hear a whistle, simply watch if they are going to walk out or not.
I do exactly 40 as that is the lowest cruise will set at, if i hit a child it is the parents fault for not watching it. I have broken no law doing the speed limit.

i am all for driving slowly around schools, and have no problem slowing down to a stop if necessary. running over a kid is not something i'd ever want to carry on my conscience.

having said that, the lollypop ladies who just repeatedly push the crossing button as if they're playing Space Invaders drives me crazy. if there's a bunch of kids walking up to the crossing, wait for a minute or two until they all get there so the traffic only stops once. i suspect they know that but seem to consider traffic their enemy.

Ah yeah but it isn't about you and what you can and can't do. the kids often can't hear directions over the loud noises. Kids will be kids and they only learn at a certain rate. We can't pack them in cotton wool so it'd be great if drivers were a bit more careful around crossings IMO.
I guess it is up to the educated driver to decide what is sensible rather than what is legal.

Surely by a primary school age children know to not go near a road. I can understand children with mental disabilities not understanding that, but your run of the mill 5 year old should understand that BIG CAR + BIG ROAD = bad. If that is not the case I pity these children for having the parents they have.
Perhaps instead of blaming drivers for every problem around roads, people could take responsibility for themselves and their childrens lives. That being said, there is certainly some wankers out there who refuse to slow down at all, mix this with mums with car loads of kids...that is the most dangerous environment, not someone with a loud exhaust or music who is doing the speed limit and watching what is happening.

actually they're the same thing. if a judge decrees you should have been doing 15 km/h due to prevailing conditions (i.e. kids on the road) then the speed limit is irrelevant in law.

Ummmm I doubt that, otherwise we wouldn't have speed limits but simply a 'drive according to conditions' situation.

Cody has a major speech delay and comprehension delay, so No he does NOT understand the danger of roads. He is a perfectly normal child, who has no "mental" disablities and there are a few kids in his class who have delays too, its very common. We also have a blind girl in his class.

Why the hell is there any debate about this anyways? crossing ladies or men are there to make sure kids cross the road safely, ok yelling abuse is prolly a little to far to go, perhaps a phone call to that school to let them know. Just slow down, its not like a school zone lasts for 20kms.

And your avatar is funny as but my PC freezes for about 1 second each time i comes on my screen GRRR

an agreed about doin 40km/h, its bloody slow and i feal confident that i could stop in time for any crazy road running kids. and im on the right side of the law as you pointed out also.

That'd be great. Unfortunately it isn't always the case. That is life my friend.

Yep, and wouldn't it be great if drivers realised that the speed limit isn't always safe just because you are 'allowed' to do it.

we have both. you cannot exceed the limit, but cannot drive beyond what is reasonable for the prevailing conditions.

if you were going too fast and slide off a wet road on a corner you will be booked, even if you were under the speed limit.

as a driver you are required to make a reasonable effort to avoid collisions, including with pedestrians and including slowing down if necessary. if you try arguing in court "the kid shouldn't have been there and i was doing the speed limit" you'll find that public transport will quickly take a more important role in your life.

there are people like that on any street, away from schools. maybe every road should be 15km/h to cater for everyone that puts themselves in danger
