hey guys, just pulled the manifold off the pile of scrap in my driveway and FARK its a mess, ive got a bit of a feeling the person before me didnt look after it very well
BUT my real quesiton is, does anyone know what this is ????? \/ \/

thatll be a balance shaft. stops the motor vibrating like crap

thats the balance shaft, alot of people get rid of them and install a double row timing chains instead, i think its there to get rid of some vibrations in the engine at certain revs, i cant remember

unless you're going to go nuts on the motor, leave it in.
good old sludge had a 5L in the same condition pulled the motor down and cleaned all the sludge out and put it back together and it was fine

yeh just run a double row timing chain though and while your pulling your engine apart, replace the welsh plugs, i got a nice surprise taking mine out, some people should learn to run coolant in an engine especially in these iron buick blocks, wasnt to much rust there....
