    Default Speargun License - VIC

    Hey,

Just wondering if you need a license to have a speargun and fishing with it now and then?

    In Victoria...

have a look on the DSE and fisheries website.
I remember reading early last year, that you can only carry a hand spear, and it may only be used for rock lobster. That was for victoria. The spears may only be one prong with no barbs.
It still doesnt stop people (us) using the spear for flounder, and even flatty lol.
But we do it were theirs no one else around and only take it if were going prawning, if we go prawning in lakes entrance we leave the spear at home though.

How effective would a hand spear be for like flatties and snapper and what not...

I basically plan on using it around our local pier...

bloody hard for flatty, only ever got one, out of probly 1000 lol. They are so hard to get close to as it is, then spearing them is so hard. I got a sling on mine, so you just pull it back and let it go, but you need to get them from a reasonable distance still. Their only bout 30 bux, mines a metal 2 piece, 5 prong with barbs, and it was only 30 bux, theirs cheaper ones but their not two piece, or fibreglass so they float lol. Worth it for some fun, and great for getting flounder.

hand spear would be fine. i used a hand spear for ten years before getting a speargun. iv speared mullet, leatherjacket, blackfish, flathead and since iv moved up from tassie to tha gold coast iv speared a couple of taylor. you can spear just about anything with a hand spear. unless your goin after really big fish a speargun is not nesesary. the main reason i would use a hand spear over a speargun is because spearguns are a pain to reload underwater after you have taken a shot.

Theres some good spear fishing to be had down your way . Head down the Mornington pier about 100 meters ,swim out to the left about 70 meters and there is an outcrop just under the surface . Plenty of fish to be had there.
Use to SCUBA dive there many years ago .

i love spear fishin havent done it lately cause i havent really had the time. good luck with it tho mate jus a bit of a hint incase uv never done this b4 try to stay as calm as u can and move slowly. i used to go with a mate it used to be a pain cause every time he saw a decent fish he wld get really excited and start shooting everywhere and not hit a thing scare everything away he also wld chase them no good. common mistake made by people that are inexperenced. iv shot heaps cause im patient and i move slowly

Daveys bay used to be good till they put the stairs there . Also you should try French Island . Catch the ferry from Stoney Point , I think they run wvery 4 hours. Plenty of Flat head and Stingrays there
