    Default FLASH Developer Salary

Calling input from all flash developers.

Basically i want to know roughtly how much the work i am doing is worth so when i comes time to ask for a raise i don't under shoot myself.

Basically I'm a inhouse Flash Developer for an e-Learning Company.

    Tasks i perform:

    - Design flash interactive components to fit into an xml framework
    - Actionscript 2.0 and starting 3.0 programming
    - xml markup and basic changes
    - Graphic design
    - I'm the only expert on a program called "Captivate" currently
    - Occatioanlly i design graphics and layouts of client documents and ppt presentations
    - Just started designing e-Learning module layouts from scratch myself for client proposals.

I think that basically sums it up. I've been working at the company for just over half a year and am planning on asking for a raise come my 1year of working there.

So far they basically think the sun shines out my arse and when i asked them for some constructive critism so i could work on areas they think i need to address they had none for me.

The original salary I took was abit below average as this was my first real break into the industry after UNI.

I roughly have a figure in my head i would be looking at but wanted some input if any of you guys are in the field.

    Thanks!

    Raf

The problem is, it isn't what others are getting paid that is valid, it what the company see's as your worth.

I could say to you hypothetically that you should say ask for a payrise to 100k. However, your work may not reflect those wages nor will your company pay those wages. I work on a 10% rule. If my boss fails to meet my 10% I will give notice and move on

Obviously this is yet to happen. When asking for a raise, make sure you are prepared. I get so annoyed when we have people saying they deserve a raise of sometimes upwards of 30k yet cannot state why. Obviously the raise is not given.

Pay rises at our work are based on a few points

    * Market rate (if you ask for 100k and the market rate is 50k they will only pay you 50k or get someone else who will work for that rate)
    * Your job load, if you're doing 40 hours a week you cannot ask for a large pay rise. If you're doing 60 hours and enough work for two people then it's reasonable to ask for a larger pay rise (it's cheaper than them hiring two staff members)
    * BTW Grad student rates are crap, this is because you don't have industry experience. Ignoring the argument of study vs industry experience, if you don't have experience in the industry there is only so much you can ask for.

Ask for slightly more than you want and show that you are open to negotiation. They may offer other benifits e.g. company which can be better because the more you may go into a higher tax bracket and lose a lot of what you've earnt in a rise.

Also get a spread of market rates for your state and will be split into Junior, Medium and Senior for your job role.

A note to anyone who is in the programming or web development industry: I'm studying the Advanced Diploma of Computer Science. I know this isn't a degree, but I have extensively studied programming languages such as Visual Basic, actionscript, php & mysql, and also Flex. I took study much further than what my Adv Dip and I am interested in getting a job at the end of this year. I'm extremely motivated and I would be willing to work for a low wage, or take up a traineeship (Flex development or php & mysql would be ideal). Hopefully if anyone knows of a company that recruits people like me, tell me about them!

K... yeah the industry experience or rather my lack of it is why im waiting a year or till after this financial year before asking for it.

I am planning on asking for about 5 or 10 G more that what i want...

In terms of workload... in a normal week i will work about 44 odd hours but if there is work to me done i work till its done...

i've been looking at the sites that give the "Average" salary people get for this sort of job so i know the rough ballpark i can aim for...

    My advice would be;

Get a copy of your grades. Visit companies and hand out your resume (dress the part). IT industry is under staffed so people are more likely to hire you under a cadetship to train you their way, than in previous years. Also make contact with every IT recruitment company. They get paid for placing people and will try their damndest to slot you into a role. In my eyes concurrently studying and working in an area shows employability.

Also be happy to start from the bottom. A lot of companies promote from within, so get a start working on a helpdesk show enthusiasm. I warn you now though that helpdesk has the highest turnover rate from burnout. Average employee staying in that role is 6 months.

Sounds like you're on the right path. If you want a raise from within your company show that you're willing to work till deadlines. When the boss needs something done put your hand up to help.

As an example I do level 2 and 3 support. I could get another job with another company immediately paying more money. Although where I currently work I have a great boss who lets me work autonomously and the experience I'm gaining will be better for my career in the long run. I've been in my current role for two years now, which is how long a manager will want to see that an employee has worked for a company for. Working a year at a time or less in roles looks like you're just job hopping and not loyal.

Thanks for that, I'll start doing it around mid year so I can line a job as soon as I finish my Advanced Diploma. My grades are ~95% so all I need is my break into the industry! Otherwise it's off to uni for another 2 years...

Become a Java guru and be willing to move to Canberra and I'd look at starting you on around $65k (in today's market) to develop/customise our solutions for new clients we're getting this year.

You'd seriously pay 65k for someone without experience or a degree?! That sounds amazing! Do you have any examples of what type of solutions you implement? I studied Java for 3 months last year, (and c for 6 months, which of course is similar) and could easily get a larger grip on it...

65k is pretty close to the standard wage for a run of the mill Java developer with little experience these days.

Most uni grads in the Comp Sci field find themselves starting on around 45k, and on around 60k after 6 months. Thats in any profession with that paperwork behind them.

There is a huge shortage of IT professionals at the moment, the perfect time is now to hit the market.

You and me both... I'm above the aforementioned salaries, but not heaps for someone with my time in the industry. But I enjoy my job and got a few little side projects that keep me going

Salaries in IT have sky-rocketed in the last 2 years, I've contemplated seeking out new opportunities many times, but I've found in IT if you don't like your work, it is a complete nightmare.

You'd have to study Java and C a lot longer than that to get a decent grip on it. I did Java for 18 months earlier in my degree including 6 months purely on data structures. Also been programming in C for about 2 years now. After all of that I still don't call myself an expert in either language.
