Two bartenders were convicted of grievous bodily harm by a Berlin state court on Monday for their role in serving at least 44 shots of tequila to a 16-year-old German boy who died after the drinking binge.

The court sentenced the two men, aged 21 and 18, to 10 months of social training.

A third bartender was acquitted while the trial for a fourth bartender, who is facing more serious charges of bodily harm with fatal consequences, has not yet started.

The 16-year-old boy got into a drinking contest against a bartender. But the four tricked the boy. While the bartender was drinking water, the 16-year-old was drinking schnapps. After 25 rounds he fell into a coma.

The boy was in the coma in a Berlin hospital for five weeks before he died of circulation problems last March.

The bar workers expressed regrets in court for their actions.

The case triggered a national debate over teenage alcohol abuse and the danger of "flat-rate" binge-drinking parties where customers pay a one-off entry fee and are served unlimited strong spirits all night.

Seriously though I'm a little confused as well, 44 shots of tequila would be far more lethal than the equivalent in schnapps given that it has a far stronger alcohol content

hmmm, just outa curiosity i did some quick math on it all. there's about 44ml in a standard shot, 22 shots in 1L....so this bloke would have drunk around 2L of tequila.

A standard drink or shot here in Australia is 30ml although a lot of shot glasses sold are nearer to the 40 ml mark as you've mentioned

Germany has 20ml standard or 40ml double shots so if it was the smaller glass then that's just over a bottle of tequila

Iv can drink, no problems drinking a bottle of spirit over the course of a night. But then i fall asleep.
Now way in hell i could shot a bottle though

Most bars/restaurants are supposed to use a quantified 30ml shot glass. But as a barman/waiter i can assure you, we dont. Most of the time we use a poring cap with no 30ml cut off. We just upend the bottle and count to 3 if its a thin spirit or 4 if its a creamy spirit. After a while you can get pretty good at it. I nearly always hit 30ml, but thats after 4 years practice

ive always wanted to try 100 shots of beer in 100 minutes. thats equal to drinking 8 beers in 1 hour 40.

it isn't too bad troy. it's the froth that is the killer. You get into it and go for a normal burb and froth like a madman. Thats usually when people keep going and chunder. We did it with pre-mixed cougar which was much easier. Feel bloody heavy though.
