    Default Credit Card Fraud

Well I knew it existed but I'm experiencing the affects of it at the moment.

Cards worked late last night and then didn't work at lunch time today.

Knowing I was nowhere near my limit I called my bank. Apparently their frauds area has cancelled them both for whatever reason (not released) but they do it to protect the customer (me) and the bank... Apparently they work together globally and if they get notified of lists of compromised card numbers, they can them and re-issue the customer with new ones at no cost to the customer.

So a quick call to the bank this arvo and I found out that new cards will be couriered to me next Wednesday. Not bad - 3 business days turn around from a bank and all for free. A minor inconvenience but nice to know they do **** like this so I don't end up with some $5,000 transaction in Nigeria or something!

Then I asked about the fees for cash withdrawls at ATMs and EFTPOS purchases cause I get 25 free per month and $2 fees for non-(my bank) atm withdrawls. They told me to just use whatever I needed and if I get extra charges ring back next Thursday after I have my new Credit Cards and they'll reverse any of the charges.

It's actually nice to be able to give a thumbs up to a bank for once... An interesting experience. Just glad it didn't happen while I was overseas or something!!!

    bahahah classic!

as for the fraud, ive seen soo many lists, they do exsist and they'res millions of this **** goes on...the lists have everything, ccv2 numbers expiry dates, names addresses phone numbers. date of birth.. everything! personally ive seen the lists but NEVER.. and i say NEVER touched it.. i knew a few people who did and got busted.. ohh the fun things you get up to when your 14 aye?

in my experiance keep your credit card away from the internet... better yet dont own a credit card.. works for me!

online stores get hacked all the time and their customer databases stolen, most of the time they're not setup correctly and its too easy for a hacker to get in.. once again ive never done this just seen the other side of how this all works...

I never understood credit card security really...

Say you pay for some stuff at coles... If your the checkout chick (you should probably consider what your doing working as a check out chick, but anyway) you can physically read the numbers on the front and back of the card. If you've got a good memory im sure you could easily steal peoples numbers...

Would have been even worse in the old days with the machines that imprinted the card number on the yellow receipt paper.

    Seems so easy....

they never printed the entire number, just a part of it..

thats not how they stole the numbers either...
in the old days you had to physically obtain one, but since the internet came out its easy game!.. like i said

DONT TAKE YOUR CREDIT CARD NEAR THE INTERNET.. paypal is good, even direct deposit!

i got ripped off on ebay a few times and recovered all my money back through paypal!

I would recommend always checking on your credit statement every month. Alot of small fraudsters test the waters by starting small, then slowly they try and then go for GOLD.... But the larger operations seem to just go for it....

With regards to details being ripped off at a retailer... receipts only print the 1st couple # and last couple of card #... Purely because of the fact that fake cards never have this setup properly...

Also just another note, if your looking to travel with your credit card, always phone your bank before you go.... so they can note where you may use the card... Like slow poke said if they see something suss.. they will try to call, but if they get no answer they will cancel your card...

Thats my 2 work-related cents today...

People dont consider how easy it is for fraud to be done with credit cards.
I worked at a pizza shop and if someone wanted delivery we would get there credit card # over the phone and as a driver I would go out there get the card off the customer to check the signature and just like that all I had to do was remember is the 3 digit verification code on the back and record all the info the was on the docket and then I could go on a shopping spree on the net.
    How safe is that ???
I ofcourse would never do anything like that but it was so simple to do and the fact that people would happily hand there card over to a 17 YO kid goes to show how oblivious some people are.

The older styre credit machines that you put the card in, the receipt on top of and swipe over the whole lot twice imprint the WHOLE number on the receipt.

Now that you mention it about the pizza place. I ordered pizza the other night online with Dominos and there was a bit of a hiccup and the manager came back out later and asked to check the signature on my card. Hmmm... Might call my bank tomorrow and let them know. I paid online with my card so he'd need a bloody good memory but hey, I have my credit card numbers (including the 3 or 4 digit security codes), tax file number, medicare number, medibank number all memorised . So it can be done.

we have a policy at work that we DO NOT accept credit card details over the phone unless you are a known business or individual that deals with us due to fraud a little over 12 months ago.

If you wish to use credit card you MUST come visit in person to swipe the card.

Bascially someone got hold of someone elses credit card number, put a large amount of items on it. We charged it, yeh ok no worries, sent the items. Get a phone call from a lady in Melbourne a short time later asking why theres $4000 worth of stuff on her card? Thats how easy it was to do and how easy it was to fool a large company.

So its come to that. Some people cry about it, not happy, buy elsewhere. Hate to say it, but we would rather send away a few one time customers then to have a repeat of this

There is of course now also a form that must be filled out and faxed back for each credit card purchase for our regular genuine credit card purchasers.

My Amex requires a pin now, even our Commonwealth Visa requires a pin now.
I will stay with amex as they guarantee to not allow my card to be fraudulently used. They also monitor transactions etc and anything suss you are contacted immediately. Found this out at least a dozen times now. They also will not cancel the card, just suspend until they get verification.

yeah SMART card I think it is, we still havent implemented that into our credit cards yet... but more and more people keep asking for it...

Ive been told its almost a must when travelling to Europe and stuff...

In regards to monitoring your transactions, pretty much all banks inc AMEX i guess have what they call falcon which basically looks for large or unusual withdrawals/purchases... That system works a charmmm

I totally agree mate! A few months ago, someone deducted $270 off my card without authorisation. I didn't owe anybody anything, i was 100% debt free, and no fees were to be incurred on any of my accounts or cards, and i hadn't used my credit card in a few months as it's for only when i am stuck and need petrol etc etc. Then i went to use it one day and it wouldn't work, i rang the bank and they had done the same thing, except my card was already on it's way.

I was quite impressed with that!! Definantly a thumbs up for Westpac on my behalf!

i work in retail and i gotta say, so many customers swipe their credit card, hit ok and put it away in their wallets. you tell them to take it out again so you can see the signature, and they get totally ****ed at you!

the thing they don't realise is, if i'm not checking the signature, they could be anyone else with a fake/stolen card. i'm doing them a favour by wasting those 5 seconds of their life!

So many people will check the signature against the back of the card and even if it's completely wrong they just go "yep all good" and hit yes on the terminal.

Yeah its pretty scary, when i worked for a telemarketing company, selling newspaper subscriptions 2 employees were arrested as they were remembering the card numbers and all the info that they were given over the phone and going on a spree over the internet.

It was very scary to see how many custmers would readily offer their details to me over the phone at that job.

I work at servo and between 10pm-5:30am it is prepay. You come in, give me $20 or watever u wanna put in and then they go put it in (I set the bowser to stop on the right amount)....well some people wanna fill up and obviously don't know how much they're gonna use...so I ask them to either leave me $50 or their bank card (just so we know they're comin back to pay), then come back when they're finished to pay for it. I've never had anyone think twice about giving me their credit card, they just hand it over....I didn't even think of the risk their taking until reading this thread.

My credit card which is connected to my bank account (so I can only use my own funds) is gettin a bit old and my signature on the back is pretty much faded away so much that it's not visable anymore. I use it everywhere as it's free to use and no fee's are incurred for credit....and out of 100's of transactions the only place which made sure it was my card was Radio Rentals. The lady asked to see some ID as she couldn't see my signature on the card. No one could possibly know if it's a stolen card or not coz there's no signature on my card.....maybe I should spend the 5 seconds and redo it lol.

Also the 3 digit number has worn off, and the only way to get it is to hold the card at the right angle so u can see the embossed letters on the card.

You have a debit card not a credit card. I don't know why so many people are so concerned about credit card fraud. It is up to the banks to make sure cards are secure. If you dispute purchases on your card the banks cannot make you pay it.

My commonwealth is a credit card, is also linked to all my accounts. Defiantly not a debit card

Yeah but danny8 has stated that his card uses his own funds. Therefore he isn't using credit. That would make it a debit card!

On a side note, who the hell orders pizza online? What's wrong with the telephone? Or am I stuck in the dark ages?

Well since I push the 'credit' button on all the machines, and it's a Visa, I figured it means it's a credit card. I know it isn't credit, but still it's used as one...and would have the same loopholes as a proper credit card as only a signature is required, which is pretty much no security at all anyways.

Most banks now have VISA connected to your debit account, so you can make 'credit' purchases with your own money.

On the checking signature side of things, i was known as a real **** when checking signatures, as if i didn't think the signature was a complete match, i'd make the customer show their drivers license, to make sure everything match (assuming John Smith doesn't steal John Smiths card haha)
Customers hated it, but it was my job.

Same thing as with Domino's, when we had credit card purchases over the phone, people would relay the card number, and the person taking the call would write it down on paper. Glad i don't have a credit card, although this company was old fashioned, and still even accepted cheque's.

Danny, its time for a new card. Your not allowed to 're-sign' a credit card. Also with the fact the security code is gone, just pay up the couple of bucks & get a new card!!! If your bashing it around & it wears that much, trying signing it in fine tipped perm marker instead of a pen.

    Cool

I dont know if this has been covered on here before......
What i do now is on my credit card where u normaly sign it, i now write "PHOTO I.D. REQUIRED" on the strip.
So whenever i swipe the card i then place the card on the table in front of them and the big niko writting almost always catches their attention.... ( they nearly always pick it up and have a closer look to double check what is written on there. What this does is in the circumstances that someone actually takes the time to properly look at the card to check your signature, they ask to see your I.D. everytime.... It seems to work well.
So in the off chance that someone has stolen your card and is trying to use it, they then either have to have a fake drivers licence or card etc to get through.
Yes some people never check cards and signatures.....
Also if it was internet fraud where it is just your card details that are stolen, then this will not help you at all!
    But every bit helps.
I was emailed a great article on helping to protect your accounts a while ago.... willsearch and see if i can find it and post it here!
