    Default Online this and that..........WTF?

Was just reading bravotwozero's post in the credit card fraud thread and it made me think, are alot of people getting really lazy nowadays with our ever popular internet getting bigger and bigger?

For instance ordering pizza online as bravotwozero said in the other thread, ordering groceries online, buying alcohol online, chatting on msn (i rarely use it, it's annoying) or email for a few examples. Is it me or are people getting lazy, or is this just a matter of convenience?? Even satellite navigation could be tied in with what i am talking about. I'd much prefer to pick up a phone and call somebody as opposed to sms'ing, emailing or chatting on msn, i don't like sat nav's i'd prefer to look up my route in the Melways, drive to where i am going so in future i can use my brain to remember where i am going instead of relying on a computer to get me where i am going, i'd prefer to get in my VP and drive to the pizza shop or bottle-o and purchase my alcohol off a PERSON as human's need interaction with other human beings to keep us sane and sociable.

Does anyone sort of see what i am getting at now? Could we also possibly blame some of Australia's child / adult obesity problem on the same kind of things due to video games and television? I personally haven't owned a video game console since the super Nintendo, and haven't picked up a controller or played a video game since the Nintendo 64. I really don't like video games, and i watch maybe one or programs on the Crime Investigation channel a week on Foxtel at home and that's it. I'd prefer to be outside or in my garage or out driving or socialising. Is this a sign of my age, or am i (as bravotwozero also said) stuck in the dark ages?

I don't mind if i am, i like being the way i am, i honestly don't like TV or video games, i use the net for this forum, the sc forum or looking up a piece of information i need and that's all. I love being outdoors, i love getting excercise and the gym and i like socialising with other human beings. I don't plan on changing anytime soon either. I notice a fair few of my mates have those new Nintendo things with the weird name (forget what they are called), massive TV's and are always on msn. I own a big flatscreen TV, but it rarely gets switched on unless my best friend stays over and her and i watch a movie or something, other than that, it gathers dust and isn't used.

Is anyone else on here like myself, or are we a dying breed nowadays?

Oh and before i forget, what the **** happened to the old days of the "win an instant prize by just looking under your coke / fanta / sprite / pepsi etc lid"? I haven't seen one in ages!! It's all sms promo's that cost you an arm and leg nowadays to win a few measely prizes!! Hence why i never win anything, i wouldn't waste my money of that sms promo crap.

Personally, I'm with you. A lot of my friends at uni are geeks, and are always harassing me about the latest game or the latest graphics card or whatever, and its like, whats the point? How is sitting in your private lair fragging some stranger online any better than going out to the pub, meeting people, getting drunk, and having a great time? I'm an IT student, and a geek myself, and even I would rather spend 100 bucks on a night's worth of grog than a WoW subscription, haha.

And as you were saying, there are some things that just don't belong on the internet. Such as places to buy grog - I'd prefer to simply go to the bottle shop myself, pick up a case and take it to the checkout myself and have it straight away than buy it online.

The problem is, is that people are using the technology simply for the sake of using the technology, rather than using the technology because they need to.

Yeah I agree with what you're saying... I've noticed two things since I joined the IT revolution...

lol, i bet you use drive thru for junk food too!!

Personally, we try and be as active as possible, if we do eat any type of food which has an option to use a drive thru we will go in(very rare we eat any crap like that), we do not order things online until we have researched at other shops around here and have found it to be a better price(as with anything).
As for the net etc, I use it for work, email, voip phone, google etc, have no choice, it saves a lot of time.

I use the net to order pizza's, buy stuff I can't buy in shops or even to save money because buying online is often heaps cheaper.

I used it to buy most of the mods for my car, buy + sell my motorbike, research anything I do and use it extensively with uni. I use it for billions of other things to make my life easier. So what?

What's wrong with using a resource to maximise the use of my own time and money? Btw, the only game I have on my computer is Spider Solitaire, agreed about the mindless hours spent in front of a game. But using the internet as a convenience is a sign of the times.

People have a lot more to do nowadays than they did 50 years ago, we need to make more efficient use of our time to keep up. How can you be against efficiency?

Work a hell of a lot harder. Have more and more things to pay for and do.

People work longer hours than their counterparts 50 years ago. We live a much faster lifestyle and have less disposable lesiure time than 50 years ago. We work more productively and produce a hell of a lot more.

Minux - I don't eat drive thru take away, occasionally after i leave a pub or something i'll be walking to a taxi or train or whatever, and i'll walk into maccas to grab something to fill my stomach, but i'd rather cook something up at home. Drive through's are crap anyway.

I can understand what a few of you are saying in terms of businesses using the net etc for ordering, which is fair enough too due to the fact that it saves time, but i am meaning in terms of personal use.

That's why livin the bogan life is the best, not much to worry about cos I keep things simple and don't bother with all the technology that is so useless (such as phones with all those retarded extras, huge entertainment systems, everything available online). I've had many interesting things happen while even going out to get a pizza.
Also, everyone wants the latest products, when from my experience, new stuff doesn't even last through warranty, while I've had old fridges, microwaves, etc. last for years and years without faults.

Agreed, I order pizza over the internet, with some of the voucher coupons its heaps easier.

And it takes out that missing link of poor customer service. If a machine is looking after the order for me I don't have to deal with a 15 year old with an attitude problem. Or a 17 year old manager with an attitude problem.

Ill buy my alcohol from a shop.. Even if it was available online I still think I'd go and pick it up. Just convenience in that respect, I don't know that on Saturday night ill want a carton of extra dry's until Saturday arvo.

I buy most electronic gear online, it's much much cheaper and I get better service online from retailers I've been dealing with for a while now then I do from local shops.

I sms because it costs me 15c as opposed to 2 dollars for the same message over a phone call.. However I agree a phone call is more personal and it gets a reply instantly.

I'd use a gps, I'd still remember where I'd been.. Just because it's telling me where to go doesn't mean my brain is switched off, means I can pay more attention to the physical landmarks and where to turn.

lol its just technology and I embrace it. I use ebay all the time I make lots of money on it, bets the hell out of selling my stuff at the markets of garage sales. I like to shop online, when I need to buy something I do my homework figure out where I can get the best deal, if its online then great if its reatils fine who cares I just go for the best deal. I do go out and buy our groceries each week or more often because I like fresh food and I like to chose the quality of it.

I have never ordered a pizza online because as far as I know its only the crappy big pizza chains that do that and on the rare occassion we do eat pizza I order a nice gourmet woodfired pizza from a little local shop. Msn I use a lot, I'm online a lot with uni and work and its just being sociable. Netbanking saves me so much time, I'd hate to live without it.

Tv- I don't watch much of that theres never much on that interests me. Mobile phone I never use in fact I decided to go on a prepaid plan because I was never even using the lowest $10 plan I could find, I havent used my phone in so long and havent bothered to buy credit since June last year.

I don't see what the big deal is. Its like a car, you use it to get you around because its quicker, easier and more convenient. They didn't always have cars, they are just another technological advancement. Just because you use cars when people lived without them hundreds of years ago doesn't make you lazy. Just as people who choose to embrace the internet to make their lives easier doesn't make them lazy.

I see it more as utilizing the resources we have to their fullest! A lot of people work longer and longer hours, if they can make their lives easier and have more time for themselves then why not use the internet for such things.

Why drive to the post office (would take about 10 minutes to get there and find parking and walk to the post office) stand inline for 5 minutes, spend another 10 minutes paying bills, when you do it online in less than 5 minutes, without all the hassle of going to the post office? Same with banking. (Carbon neutral and all that!! lol)

The internet has revolutionised the way we do things, its as simple as that. Created new markets and opened existing ones to a larger audience.

So basically, let's say the internet decided to commit suicide, heaps of you would be up the preverbial creek without a paddle?

Hence why i try not to rely much on the internet and technology for entertainment. I don't think the internet would ever die, nor would video games, but i like to keep myself in that mindstate.
