Ok, it's time for a new tattoo, and this time I'm going with some Jap symbols (Kanji I think) but anyway I want to know if the translation I have is accurate or not. can anyone help?
here are the symbols

For some reason they look chinese to me not japanese.
yeah they're chinese. i just asked a girl in class, she said the first one means family, the second means something like brief, the third she didn't know because it was a traditional character, and modern chinese uses simplified characters.
Saw a cartoon which put a nice twist on the "Japanese symbol" tattoo...it had a line of Japanese guys getting tattooed by a white guy, who had a huge smile on his face. The Jap guy leaving the parlour was holding up his sleeve and showing his mate the tattoo, and said "I don't know what it means, but he told me it is an ancient Western symbol of honor and trust".
Of course, the tattoo actually reads "I Love C0ck!"![]()
isnt it usually the other way around.. you work out what words you want and then look up the characters?
i know this was covered in another thread but why go for something that obviously has no meaning to you? So many Chinese character tatts out there on people who don't know the first thing nor have any interest in china, Chinese or the culture.
Get it in English! something like "TATTOO" would be a good one.
ahh yeah thanks for that....
i did use the words i wanted and looked for the symbols, but i wanted to make sure that the meanings were accurate.
they may well be chinese, but the website i got them off said they were jap. and I do have an interest in ancient japan, not modern. but having an interest in the old ways doesn't mean i need to speak the language (tried to learn and couldn't get even a basic grasp after 6 months)

Errr, dude, surely for a new tattoo you could pick something a little less popular and extremely common than asian lettering......??
I have a tribal sleeve on my left arm, a tribal sleeve covering my right leg, and a few stars on my right arm, everytime i was in getting all those tattoos done (around 12 or 13 hours all up), at least 2 people were in the same shop getting asian lettering done on either their wrists, lower back, or upper arms.
You don't seem like a dumb ****, i'm sure you can think of something decent and custom to get inked on yourself! I got mine and my sisters initials side by side in graffiti style lettering on the inside of my right arm, that kinda stuff looks sweet, plus it means something to me because it's my little sisters initials. Family stuff is always good and you never regret it. Plus, chicks dig ithahahahaha.

I know that asian designs are pretty common, but I haven't even spoken to a tattooist I would trust, so it's not something I'm doing next weekend

Ahhh i see, that's fair enough then mate! The chicks i mentioned in my previous post just get the Japanese symbols for either "love" or "friendship". It's really irritating lol.
Design a big tatt, then just get the outline done first. That way with a huge outline, you know you will eventually go back and get it filled in. That's how i got my sleeves done, i was sick of staring at just outline and got it done in 3 - 4 hour blocks. Anything more than 4 hours starts to get a bit uncomfortable for me.
