WA MP embroiled in chair sniffing claim



West Australian Opposition Leader Troy Buswell has repeatedly refused to deny allegations he sniffed the chair of a Liberal party staffer.

Mr Buswell, who has already admitted to snapping a Labor staffer's bra as a drunken party trick and has been accused by retiring Liberal MP Katie Hodson-Thomas of making sexist remarks towards her, said on Monday the latest claim was part of a smear campaign against him.

The allegation - that he started sniffing the chair of a Liberal staffer after she had finished talking to a constituent in 2006 - has placed Mr Buswell's behaviour towards women under increasing scrutiny.

Mr Buswell on Monday told reporters he had predicted the negative campaign against him after taking over the leadership from Paul Omodei earlier this year.

Perth News Ltd newspaper, The Sunday Times, said it had been contacted by Liberal MPs who claimed Mr Buswell, while he was deputy to then leader Matt Birnie, had picked up the chair of the Liberal staffer and sniffed it in front of her.

On an earlier occasion, Mr Buswell was said to have crawled around on his hands and knees pretending to be the woman's husband.

The woman, who asked not to be named, said she was horrified and embarrassed by the incidents.

Mr Buswell fronted the media on Monday and was repeatedly asked to deny the claims that he had sniffed the chair.

He refused to do so, each time saying he would not be drawn on the issue.

"It's not my intent to comment on detail on unsubstantiated, anonymous rumours. I'm not going to do it in this case and I'm not going to do it in future cases," Mr Buswell told reporters.

"My intent is to focus on the issues that matter to the people of Western Australia."

Mr Buswell would not say why he had admitted to the bra snapping incident but was not prepared to comment on this occasion.

He said he would not be distracted from keeping the government to account and finding meaningful solutions for West Australians.

"Three months ago I stood before the media here, and I foreshadowed that what I expected to see or what you would see over the year ahead would effectively be the mother of all negative personal campaigns against me," he said.

"This is part of that."
