Alarm Install
Just after a rough figure on how much i would expect to pay for the installation of an alarm in my car? (e30 BMW)
It already had central locking... and thats about it.
Just looking at a cheapy one off ebay...
So just inst allation for it...
On a side now... found this...
New 2 Way Remote Car Alarm Shock w Remote Engine Start - eBay Car Alarms, Safety, Security, Car Parts, Accessories, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 12-May-08 22:42:30 AEST)
All good and well but the "range" made me laugh... you know, cause i often have the urge to unlock my car when im a kilometer and a half away!! lol
But yeah, approx price on installation...
Cheers!

g'day m8
I recently installed a Hornet alarm in my daughters Lancer, the alarm is pretty easy to fit (i am an auto elec)the cost of the alarm retailed $190 or $299 fitted,it has protection on the doors, boot, bonnet and has a motion detector,it also operates the central locking for keyless remote.
What you need to know is if there is a doorlock actuator in the drivers side door,if not you will need to install one to operate the keyless entry part of it
I used one out of a ford.
Mind you it took me all day to do it so $299 is cheap lol but still i saved my daughter $130,i also hooked up both imobilization modes on the ign and start circuits.
All you need is a good pair of crimping pliers a testlight, and a reasonable tool kit and a reasonable knowledge.
PS if ya car has an air bag and your unsure of wiring ect , LEAVE IT ALONE !!!!!!!! THE AIRBAG WIRING IS YELLOW AND MOST TIMES IS MARKED i always work with me head away or under the steering wheel where ya can, better being a live chicken that a dead hero

^^^ Thanks... so like 130 odd just to install if i supply the equipment.
Yeah no airbag in my car... lol
What do you mean by "doorlock actuator"?
I can open and close both doors using the key in the driver door and the passenger door.... and the boot...
THanks for the info.

the door lock actuator is the electric device that locks/unlocks the door, most cars that have "central locking" have only actuators in the doors other than the drivers side, its just got a switch thats operated by the key, you will need to install an actuator in the drivers side door, which is about $70 from what i was told,go buy a secondhand one from the wreckers,i used a ford one coz i had it here, there is 5 wires on the actuator you only need 2 so just keep trying them till ya get it to work, dont worry if ya get a heap of sparks coz thats the internal switch which isnt used in this aplication
as far as costing $130 to install i would say no that was a all up price buying the alarm off them, bare in mind it took me all day to do it (and i had'nt done one before) so even if they did it in half the time it would cost ya around $350,so go buy one from autobarn and have it installed for $299,might cost ya more if it needs a an actuator in the drivers door.

Does the brand of car alarms make much difference? I have seen these nameless 'made-in-the-Orient' car alarms selling for B$60-90. then there's the hi end Viper alarms and Clifford alarms with auto start, motion detector and even one car i've seen that takes 360 degree photos of the car in case someone tries to break in. Cool huh?
My car just got a new head unit and there's some expensive 'toys' in the boot. So i'm looking at alarms

some of those "cool" alarms are just that cool toys with no security
if you have lots toys in boot and car do ya self a favour and go to a propper place and have a full alarm black wiring the works installed properly
nothing worse than ppl come into work and bitch and moan thir car was broken into or stolen and they go but i hd a kmart alarm on installed my my mate the local auto leccy
pay the price
most around 349 and up and you get warrantee

My advice is to get a pro to do it.
Just installing it and getting it running is only half the job. Hiding wires and doing the job properly is where the real work is, something you won't be able to do as well as someone who does it every day.
You're only going to save $100-150. Is it really worth the saving in money if you leave one little opening that means a thief can steal your car easily?
I'm all for DIY stuff, but car security is one area I'd leave to the pro's.

I agree in getting a pro to do it. Black wire alarms can be very confusing. Took me 2 days to install mine. And a had to take out half the dashboard to do it properly, and to hide the wiring.

I installed my own alarm, took me two fairly casual days to do it, I'm going to be installing another one sometime soon.
on that note, my friend had a cheap alarm installed, $250 installed, and it was complete ****!
he did not solder ANYTHING, he did not hide ANY wires, the car got broken into a week later, they found the alarm module within 30 seconds, ripped that out, and nearly hot wired the car and stole it...
realistically, if someone wanted me to install an alarm for them, I'd charge $190 labour minimum..
