new graffiti laws
just wondering what you guys think of the new graffiti laws we got here in victoria.
$550 on the spot fine just for carrying a spraypaint can.
$26,428 fine for vandalising property, with a possible 2 year jail term.
personally i think it's a bit excessive. i don't own a home, and if i did i'd be ****ed off if some little turd tagged the front fence, let alone did a full piece on my wall. (unless it was really cool), but i get the train in to the city every morning, and some of the stuff you see on the way is freaking awesome.
also there's always a thread about people looking for cool graffiti backdrops to shoot their car against.
i also want to see the specifics of whats allowable for can carrying, as i do stencil art on canvas boards, and i've had had to move around with cans from time to time.
in the end i guess it's hard to make a distinction between a cool piece on a train underpass, and someone keying profanity into a train window, maybe have legalised spots and areas for decent work to be done.

I think its a great start. Fines are a bit excessive but if your genuinely caught graffitiing/attempting to graffiti then it should teach you a lesson. They should also do the same thing with paint pens. Nothing worse then seeing little derro tags everywhere.
Some paint work does look good I will admit, but that doesnt give someone the right to damage property. Dont like the large fines? Dont do it! Simple.

I'm with you powerslave, I love some of the graffiti you see around. I think the fine should reflect the nature of your offense. If you're just tagging skinnies, then you should get life

I just hope they bring those laws to QLD, I agree with you all, good grafitti is fantastic. But around here all I ever see is tags, terrible tags, and about 8 of them on each post going under a bridge, it looks like crap.
On it's own the paint can rule around here should be a huge step, stop the little chromers in their tracks.

I like the idea of it, wish they would do something like that here. I'm an artist (not graffiti) anyway I have to buy canvases and other medium to work on so should these scumbags. They need to learn a bit of respect for property.

No problems with the laws.
For all those who say yeah but it looks good - so what? If the owner gives permission for his wall to be painted then fair enough but what we are talking about is basic respect for other peoples property. How would you feel if somebody came along and painted a mural on your car? Even if it looked **** hot I would be plenty ****ed if it happened to me.
To those who want to create such "art" you have a few options - get permission from whoever owns the wall or buy some property yourself and go nuts.

I had a few pieces done at my last place, Gave some of my old mates somewhere to do it legally.
Tags just look sh!t house, but some of the big pieces look awesome.
Not that they should do it on other peoples property, but where else can they do it!!!
Fines are a bit steep, but thats the risk they have to take now!!!

Thats one thing I remember about catching the train on school holidays to my Nan's house, all the awesome art... There used to be a huge Witch along the way somewhere. I was told by someone that some of those people have licenses to do it in certain places... Not sure about there though.
Some is art and awesome, other tags etc well pathetic really. But we wont ever stop it 100%. I think maybe having somewhere in each capital where they can go and paint as much as they want could help a little, or even comps etc? May help a little.
WA is a bit different LOL here they breath it in before it makes it to a wall, I remember when I worked next door to Super Cheap Auto, heaps of young people asking me to go buy paint for them because they "needed it for a school project" and they couldn't buy it because they were under 16. But we do have a heap of rubbish Graffiti around here.

All grafitti that has not been authorised should see the offenders hands cut off so they can never do it again!
It's called respect, GET SOME!!!
As for people saying it's good, that's why there's art shows for grafitti artists and they all sell their works for millions of dollars huh? pfffft!

i dont mind sum graffiti... some looks good, but some times its abit to much.
heck if i get to own my own hous soon, ill let the ppl paint it for me, i reckon it could look good.
But as for fines.. i think 26k is abit much for a propety.... and 550bux for carrying a can....
