A bloke gave me a set of tyres P205/65R15 92H, the brand name is DORAL and Alloy Rims.
They are Factory Original wheels and tyres from a 1989-1994 Nissan Maxima.
The tyres are in great condition but they are old, 1992.
I saw a program the other night on TV, how they reckon old tyres should not be used. These tyres are not crazed or cracked and have been in a garage for many years without exposure to sun light.
I was thinking of putting these tyres on 15 inch rims for my stock VL, but very reluctant due to the age of the tyres.
Should I dump, Strip or Sell.
The rims are in good nick.
Most people say if they have had no sunlight they are fine.
BUT my uncle gave my brother some tyres he had been storing for his project, he kept them in his shed, out of any light really. My brother put them on, on the second day he decided to go camping, got about 70k's and the tyre melted to pieces, so he put his spare on, when the other one melted just as he was coming into a town. I think we even have photos of them some where, it was quite shocking, he wasnt doing burnouts, just cruising on the highway, the first one melted to it went completly flat, the second just melted and became heavily dis-formed. I personelly would only ever put BRAND NEW tyres on my car.
I agree as above. Don't take the risk. The end result could be deadly.
there doesn't appear to be any rule about using old tyres. some people say they cause no problems, others find they don't work - as above.
it's like crossing the road without looking i suppose, you might get hit or you might not.
modern radials don't blow out so as long as you kept an eye on them you could probably see if they weren't holding up, but it's probably just easier to chuck them.
Dump them.
It's dangerous having tyres that are 5 years old, let alone 15. Irrespective of how they've been kept. Tyres still lose their elasticity via loss of moisture in the rubber compound even if they're not kept in the sun. It's just a blowout waiting to happen.
Rims would be fine.
I'd dump 'em, its not worth it risking your safety, the safety of others, and your car for the sake of a free set of tyres.
As for the rims...what do they look like? And will they fit on any cars other than a Maxima? If so, you might want to think about eBay...someone might be after 'em.
