    Rotties are ADORABLE!!!

Highly protective of their owners or any kids in the family etc. VERY loving and affectionate.

I'd get one if I didn't live in a courtyard townhouse.

Any animal has pros and cons, they have a ruff name because of the type of dog they are you just need to be carefull, they are very affectionate and loyal dogs however if they are not socialised right with other animals and children you will have a problem on your hands. They are strong and more prey driven than something like a labradore but I have a German Shepherd and get looks everywhere I go. Good socialisation, having it desexed and your basic training will see you enjoying your dog or any dog for many years to come, its all about being sensible with the situations you place your dog in, they are not humans they are pets. My Mother trains animals for a living and is also an animal behavorist ( spelling? ) and a vet nurse I personaly think they are fab its the owners I think have most of the problems

^^ Agreed its the owners giving them a bad name, just like VL's lol.

My uncle breeds and trains Rottweilers for a living, his dogs are well behavioured, we let a group of them play with my nephew when he was 2, of course we watched them, but not a chance they were gonna hurt him. My nephew was jumping on them, kicking them in the face (not on purpose) and they just sat and played. They are a great dog, and very loyal, they just need to be trained right, kind of like a horse needing breaking in.

A family friend had one it was so placid, my jack russel tryed to fight it over a bone, my jack russel won lol, only caus the Rotty had no interest in fighting, dont even think he knew wat to do.

THOUGH, also know someone that had one (it WASNT one my uncle had bred or trained) as family pet for years, played with kids everything, then one day it just snapped, turned around and nearly killed their 4yr old daughter, for absolutly no reason the daughter wasnt even near it at the time. That dog quickly got a bullet, as they recon theirs no turning back once they go feral.

Well ok thats a good response lol.
My parents used to own a german shepherd, and im assuming the same training tactics will apply to a rottie?
    As in being consistent, etc.

Ahh.... well thats what im a bit afraid of, my little brother is like 9, he wouldnt have a chance against a cat let alone a rottie...
But i suppose theres a chance of all dogs snapping?

They are not rough as if you train it correctly.

As long as you train the dog correctly and treat it well, itll be a great dog. They are a dog that do need to be trained so think about that before you get it, if you arent going to put the effort into training it properly dont get it because it will be a nuisance.

Ive got a staffie currently (used to have a Bull Terrier, had a Rottie and also had a Mastif) and its the most placid dog ever, however when my step brother comes over its snaps at him as soon as he goes to pat her. The conclusion is that hes done something to hurt her or something as a puppy, and he used to pull her ears alot and what not. All dogs have that chance of snapping. But if you treat it well, train it well you should be fine.

Ex gf's dad got one not long before we split, he was probably 6 months old I guess.

They get very energetic when playing, and because they get so huge so quick. Well I guess you wouldn't want them around little people. He was a handful for me at times when he caught me off guard and barrelled into my legs.. Half the time just simply out of lack of coordination.

He was slightly agressive and liked to bite, seemed a bit thick to get it into his head that biting was bad no matter how many snacks and no's he got.

Apart from that, awesome dog, coming from someone that never used to like them, I'm a fan.

Yep thats all it is, basic things like walking on a lead, sit, drop and leave it. Unless you realy want to get full on in to tricks ( Animal Actors ) you just need basic controle. Check out the parents and make sure there are no probs like an overbite ( top jaw does not join and goes over bottom ) any hip problems, I would never buy a dog from some one who is not a registered breeder but thats just me, be carefull and realise they are a big dog so you need a station wagon, good fencing, somewhere small to keep them at night while you are toilet training, time to spend with them, plenty of room in the back yard and they are not a dog that like to spend heaps of time by themselves. If you work full time its not a dog I would reccommend unless someone else is home. They dont have a lot of health problems witch is good, I love them.

One thing i love about them is that they are very loyal dogs. Once it has that bond with the owner and the people around it they are good to have.

its like any dog, just train it PROPERLY and you wont have a problem. go to puppy school, and maybe even look into further profesional training.

Good advice I gave the link in the last post but here it is again Animal Actors very worth while the training is fun and humane, no choker chains and bullying to get the dog to do thing just all reward based and can I say how glad I am too see so many people on here who realise that its all about training, I knew JC members were awesome!

i have had two and they were both excellent dogs, loyal, obediant (if trained from young) and very intuitive, as are dobermans. the only reason why they have a bad name, as mentioned before, is because they are often misstreated and are VERY protective. if somebody they deem as a threat attacks you they often will not stop until they think you are at a safe distance, so trying to pull your rotty off someone will often have an adverse effect. that said i would take a dog thats hard to stop over one that doesnt start any day. As with all german dogs they are excellent with childeren just be carefull when their friends are over to play (just in case their friends get a little to rough for the dogs liking). all and all i would never buy another breed appart from a rottie or doberman.

doesnt matter if a rotweilers trained or not, even them being playful and a bit excited is a bit too much for a kid under 10. im talking when there adults, and they will over power the average human.

I had a rottie for 11 years he was the best dog I ever had he was huge 65kgs. Had our first child when he was 6 and he loved my son and then my daughter also when he was 8. They would climb all over him run around with him he never knocked them over, yes he was very protective of them. If he didn't know you he wouldn't let anyone near them it was very funny to watch. I took him to puppy school and dog training every week for 2 years. I could walk him down the street without a leash and he would leave my side. I would love another but can't bring myself to get one I think I would compare the two.
