Clarkson, 48, was asked at the Hay Festival in Wales earlier this week about the fastest speed he had ever driven.

"On the public roads ... 186(mp/h)," the Daily Mail reported Clarkson as replying.

British road safety group Brake has called on the BBC to axe Clarkson, whose claim means that he was travelling about 190km/h over the speed limit.

"Jeremy Clarkson is extremely offensive and irresponsible," Brake chief executive Mary Williams said.

"His comments are very upsetting to loved ones who have suffered a bereavement through a road crash because of a speeding driver."

Clarkson claims he recorded his top speed on the road linking central London and Docklands in the world's fastest legal car, the Bugatti Veyron, which is capable of a reaching 407km/h.

The presenter has come under fire in the past for glamorising speed and contributing to bad driver attitudes.

Clarkson was involved in another scandal earlier this year after he was allegedly photographed talking on his mobile phone while driving his Mercedes.

the last thing they need to do is get rid of the guy, everybody wants a yes man. live in the real world people. i know nobody on this site condones speeding (mostly i bet because the forum rule state so), yet i bet there isn't one person on here that hasn't put the boot in it at least once. nobody is a saint.

Unlike most other random ****wits, he was doing this in a car built for speed, I am sure it wasn't done with many other road users around(unlike our lygon warriors who like to do 100+ in 60 zones during peak hour, thank god most of these guys wipe just themselves out). Time and a place people...the quicker people get that through their heads the quicker our roads will become safer!!

That being said, wish my Senator could do those sorts of speeds, doesn't seem to go anywhere after 260

i like Top Gear and Clarkson is good because he doesn't pretend to be PC but it would be a shame if he pushed the BBC too far and they canned the show. it's fun to pretend anti-speeding lobbyists will never stop him from saying and driving how he wants but i suspect that's not true in practice.

Every time I try to go faster than 100kmh my car starts beeping and this light comes on next to "Speed Alert" and it says "overspeed" or something. I don't know why it does it and I don't want to break my car so i don't go any faster than that! Maybe it is because of the sound barrier shockwave thing and it is dangerous to piegons and other nearby birds???
