    Lightbulb Holden Red !!

    Hey everyone

Just wondering if anyone can give me a few tips on how to stop the paint on my car from fading and looking old

It's just the standard "bright" red but i've been told that holden dont put a clear coat on the standard models

I've been using Meguires Carnauba Wax but i need to polish it about once a month and its just not making any differance now !!

    Any ideas ?

    Cheers Nigel

    lol

Who told you Holden don't use clear coat?

You need to wash it, caly bar it, polish it and then wax it. you should then wax it ever month to keep it protected and polish it once a year.

Use only microfibre cloths to wash and buff it.

That's a quick summary. Look up "Final Inspection" in Melbourne.

    lol... silly panel beater...

OLD OLD cars... such as my 1989 BMW that is red doesn't have a clear coat but even my VN had a clear coat...

Oh, you can get polish that has red in it... such as turtle wax red...

Used it on my lil BMW the other day... bloody amazing... though my paint was fairly oxidized and faded...

Try Meguires Tech Wax. It work great on my black and it really gives it a nice deep gloss finish.

Try Kitten number 2, it's a cutting compound and will get rid of the oxidosed paint and then you'll have decent paint to maimtain.

It is definately possible that you don't have a clear coat. Even the new bright red Mazda 3 and Mazda 6 have only a single stage paint. Also the new red VW Golf's are single stage. Easy way to tell is when you polish the car, a single stage (non clear coat) some of the red will come off onto the pad or cloth. Single stage paint isn't a bad thing. It's actually easier to work on and remove defects from a detailers point of view. Clear coats are used in metallic finishes to add the the reflections by light refraction. The clear coat provides added protection but is more difficult to work on to remove defects.

I'd say a VY would have a clear coat, because the paint they use is clear coated with 2 pack clear just after the base colour and that's what makes the paint set. But paint doesn't last forever and chances are the paint on a VY would be fading a bit by now

    Spot on scooter

i have to use about 5 differant cloths when i do polish it as they do go red almost straight away !!

Dont get me wrong ppl its still good paint and shiny as well but it starts looking old and (a bit white?) after about a month
the car does spend most of its life out side but i keep it under the car port at night time
I guess its a bit hard to explane i guess i wish i had a white car lol

    Cheers guys !!

Have you read the detailing thread in the general section? Search through my posts in that. My tips for you would be to:

1: use a sealant rather than a wax. Sealants are generally more durable and longer lasting than a carnauba wax. Of if your really keen apply a sealant and then a few hours later top it with a carnauba wax.

2: Start with a clean slate. You want to remove that oxidisation before applying your wax. Start with a wash, claybar, a 'cleaner' polish that contains fine diminishing abbrassives and then finish with your sealant. My choice of product is Meguiars #80 speed glaze but you won't find it in any retail stores. You'll have to buy it somewhere online like American Auto parts. I used it on an old black faded suzuki sierra with single stage paint and it came up like a showroom model. Then again I always work by machine. I don't like those cheap cut and polish pastes where you work by hand.

    3. Buy yourself some spray on wax like Meguiars quik wax or Duragloss aquawax and use it after each wash. It will boost the durability of your existing wax/sealant and only add about 5 or 10 minutes to the wash process.

No paint should be fading if it has been properly looked after.
