Default !!Modding cars on the dole/pension!!

PLEASE READ ALL OF THREAD BEFORE POSTING!

Ok as the title states what are your thoughts on people who mod their cars while still being on the dole? Now my first reaction to this was its not right, the dole is there to support people who are out of work or between jobs ect ect!

But then an interesting point was brought up to me the other day wich was, what if someone is on the dole and can spare/save a little bit of cash once every few months towards small mods ect and they have a disability or are mentaliy ill i.e on the pension or on the dole? Now i am between jobs @ the moment and for what its worth you dont get enough on newstart to rub 2 cents together ect and you scratch to make ends meet let alone mod your car but some out there do it and rather well..! To me i hate people who bludge off the system and others but i couldnt help but feel sorry for those out there who are @ a disadvantage and still love their cars just as much as everbody else!
    What are your thoughts?

Unfortunately there are no laws or restrictions telling you what you can and cant spend your dole on. I don't see any problem with those who are on disability payments doing it, you will find 99% of them have a hobby, I really cant see the difference between someone doing up a car, and say buying paints & canvass or buying a camera, wood working tools etc etc.

Those who are on unemployment, ok not a problem, AS long as they are actively looking for work. Why on earth would anyone "want" to be on the dole anyway?

I think my opinion changes 100% when we throw in someone on parenting payment though.

I dont see how people on the dole can afford to mod their cars i thought rego and maintenance would be a stretch. if you can mod while not having a job your obviously gettin too much or your doin something dodgy.

a disability pension is probably a little different.

How much do you get on the dole a year? Isnt it less then 10K??? Theres not really much you can spend on a car after food, bills, ciggys, drugs and alcohol....

I doubt people on the dol are driving registered and insured cars.....

Its a huge joke in my opinion.

I'm 23, and have had 9 different jobs. My life i've been out of work a total of 3 weeks. If i can do it, so can everyone else.

The dole and pension are for two very different purposes. The dole should be high enough to only pay for the very basics of life whilst one is out of work.

There are also other circumstance when people get money from the government.

Like people whose parent don't earn over a certain bracket they can get money if they are still in school/tafe/uni

now this money is meant to be used for the school/tafe/uni but unless you are actually at uni there is plenty of that money left over to spend on what ever you want

and then there is other people like me who got a pension from the goverment when i was 7. Now the reason i received this i do not wish to disclose. but what im trying to say is that there are more then a few ways you can get a pension or a allowance from the government

It All comes down to the situation that you are in..

Not being able to support a family because you spend your pension on drugs, alcohol, cars, clothes, anything is ot acceptable in my books

but there are many situation where you can receive money from the government for things that you can spend it on your hobbies and if that hobby is cars then good on you

If they can handle living without the money they are using on the car then I have no problem at all with it. Why would I - it's their money even if it does come from tax payers.

Only IF they are living sensibly, I don't want to see some guy buying a new manifold for his car going without food for three days.

And as people have said, I'd rather fund car parts then drugs. At least that way they're not out stealing things. (obviously doesn't apply to all people)

I know alot of people are saying that theres not enough money on the dole to mod your car and i couldnt agree more as im struggleing on newstart with my bills hence i wouldnt be selling my bench press and home gym :P, but money can be saved.. e.g 4 young people get into a house together and each pay 1/4 of the rent ect ect now you get $480 a fortnight on newstart (well thats what i get) and are only paying $150 a fortnight towards rent and the power bill gets payed as it comes in quarterly ect, also add to the fact that most young people dont put home phones on as they use a pre paid mobile and if you outlay even $150 for food for yourself a fortnight then you still have $180 a fortnight unaccounted for to spend on drugs/cars general crap!! maybe my figures are off a little on some things but you can see the point!

When I was at uni I was on Youth Allowance. I could have bought a bomb of a car to get around but after much teeth grinding and doing the sums, I just couldn't afford to pay for rent, electricity, food, phone and internet and then use my savings to buy a car, then insure, register it, fill and maintain it. And try to have a social life on top of that.

What I did instead was give up on the idea of a car and save the money that was left over on top of my savings until I graduated when I could buy a nice car and not struggle. In the end I also worked for two and half years out of the 4 years I was studying, and I could have just got by with a car instead I stuck to my guns and held off from a car.

I finally graduated and bought my car this year. Not buying a car when I lived off centrelink was one of the smartest decisions I have made. How the hell you can pay for modifications on top of your car and living expenses while on gov handouts I don't know. The maintenence costs alone were enough to tip the balance into the red for me.

Well, i've never got a cent from the government, and as such, think people who are 'between jobs' are just abusing the system. Sure there are people who are in a situation where they can't work (legitimately injured but not able to get workcover) I can understand.

i've never considered myself between jobs. ive always been doin study, working or looking for work. but yes, i guess i have been between a few jobs here and there. ive had mates buy stuff for their cars while being on the dole and it annoys me to think that my taxes are paying for their mobile phones and sound systems. while sittin at home doing nothing and im pullin 45+hours a week. These types of items are wants not needs and you should work to have them so you appreciate it.

    You said your between jobs.

As i explained, getting a job is simple, and a ****load simpler if your not as fussy as i was when i was looking.

Explain what your situation is if you don't want me to judge you as a dole bludger, all the information you've given however, points directly to that.

How about we just keep on topic. Rather then turning into a waste of time? We all have our opinions on the dole and dole bludgers and obviously there are legit people around. But this thread isn't about that.

    couldnt agree more
To give you an idea of the situation im in (between jobs) i started an apprenticeship with my dad last year on the 8 of jan 2007 it lasted for 10months before my dad ended up in hospital! it didnt look like my dad was going to be able to get back into work so i listed myself with biga apprentices and kept calling them reguarly for work (this is what i was told to do by my team coordinator cassie) i started to get sick off waiting @ home by the phone all the time but i really wanted to finish my apprenticeship ect so i started to look for partime work! and it was pretty hard to get back into regular work as i told them that i was registered with an apprenticeship company and that i was on call (to wich most employers turned me down flat as i coudlnt be reliable) anyway i got a job with a security company wich lasted for 3 months untill work dried up and then my dad said to me he wanted to give work another go! we started work together the other week but got rained off (as everyone knows we have had wet weather here in brizze a week or so back!) but in the meantime i have signed myself up for centerlink and yes i do feel scummy when i walk into the dole office! I love to work and the satisfaction you get from buying stauff that you have earned!

im with you on this, there is no such thing as being not able to get a job or between them. you could get a job straight away, you must start at the bottom.
work at maccas if you have to and use it as a stepping stone or even at woolies stacking shelfs

im on the 'dole' (imcapasitated looking for work). and i hate it the pay doesnt bother me its just sitting at home doing nothing,
how do people put up with this?????
the new crash shop im going to is waiting for me (will be another 5weeks) till im able to work, there not randomly doing it for no reason its because ive had experiance and had my name thrown out. you dont get a crash shop that will normally wait 3 month to take on a 2nd year apprentice

you dont find the ideal job straight away, just rember it

actually there was a government talk somewhere about giving vouchers for food and cutting payments, also paying rent directly to real estate agents to help curb excess spending!

I had to start at Hungry Jacks. Took me 11 months before I got my job as an undergraduate engineer which I held for 1.5 years. I know my situation was different but those who complain its too hard to get a job are just picky. As VL Berlina 5speed said, you need to start from the bottom then work your way up.

Even at HJ's I worked my way up the crew member levels to show a future employer that I was willing to work at being better....it worked too.

It depends on who you are talking about, are you talking about people who just fizz the system and dont want jobs? there are to many sections to even mention!
I work and so does hubby and we also recieve parenting payment, it is a tiny tiny ammount but it lowers our childcare % so we take it to help pay for the child care ( only covers a 1/4! ) I would never use it for anything other than my children because that is what it is given to me for to help raise my kids untill they start school, child care cost us $250 a week but without centrelink help it would be $400 forcing me to stop work as my pay would not cover child care, I consider the $80 a f/night a bonus and could never spend it on anything other than my childrens welfare.
People who can not work for medical/psycological resons have enough trouble without my opionions added to them!
I dont drink these days. I am allergic to alcohol and drugs. I breakout in handcuffs!

I think that the way the dole is structured over in the states also has some valid intiatives! i beleive you get 6months to find work or you off the dole tough luck! unfortuneatly its also probably why the crime rate is so high though
