Default Not LPG but natural gas at around 15c per liter

If we (our government ) will let this into Australia we can compress our huge reserves of natural gas into our cars overnight for around 15cents per liter with this unit that cost around $1,500us.

it wont happen, oil companies wont allow it and the government wont as they will get no tax from it

If your read about the Honda Civic GX that is built by Honda to take this Natural Gas fuel, on this web site it gets 6.5lt/100km hwy cycle and 9.8lt/100km city and 8.4lt/100km combined city/hwy, these are diesel figures but at 15 cents per liter!!!!!, this is a standard 1.8lt Civic with 113bhp @ 6300rpm and 109 ft lbs of torque @ 4300rpm, those figures are dam fine, and it burns ultra clean, for a fuel that would cost us so little, as we have more than we can use in Australia. Hell we could be the next Saudi Arabia and supply the rest of the world and we could all be gazillionair Ausie Sheiks.
I contacted Advanced Fuels Technology Pty Ltd in Australia who are trying to get this Phill system into Australia, but they said they ran into an incredible amount of red tape to get it passed for safety by our government (the Libs back then?) maybe Labour will give it a look in, who knows, the more noise we make the better it will be heard. You can see why the petroleum boys would be a little against it.

    "113bhp @ 6300rpm and 109 ft lbs of torque @ 4300rpm"

Those figures don't look that damn fine to me

I'd rather a diesel myself, some diesels now days are getting like 4.7L per 100km combined. Its just a pity about the price (and tax) of diesel in Australia.

The Civic GX has proven itself for years in the States and has received numerous awards including taking out "cleanest internal combustion engine" awards for years in a row. Australia needs improved CNG refuelling infrastructure, however. Fast-fill public refuelling is available on a large scale in a lot of countries overseas. We need that type of infrastructure in Australia.

Note that fast-fill CNG refuelling is already in use in Australia by government bus operations in Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide and Canberra.

I think that it is worth considering. At least it avoids having to develop new infrastructure for an alternative fuel on a wholesale level. It might mesh well with one way in which hydrogen might be used, if the technology to do that were ever to be developed to a usable stage.

Even if the range (vs petrol or diesel) is reduced, refuelling at home would be convenient.

Tax might be an issue but LPG isn't taxed, other than GST, and hasn't been for a very long while, acknowledging the benefits of diversifying and domesticating fuel supplies.

Lean burn CNG engines can be made to approach diesel fuel use efficiencies, so that isn't really a surprise.

ah, you guys DO realise this is already available here in Australia, right?

there's an RAA van here in Adelaide that runs on natural gas, but I'm pretty sure the only place that does conversions is in Melbourne

Yes and no. There have been many (emissions-related) research projects lately that have disproved this. While lean-burn (Lambda > 1) CNG engines may produce low pre-catalyst emissions of NOx and CO, they suffer from high post-catalyst NOx and HC emissions when compared to a turbocharged stoichiometric (Lambda = 1) CNG engine with a three-way catalyst. High consumption also results because the engine runs very close to the NG misfire limit. This in turn means that the performance, economy, and emissions from lean-burn engines are heavily influenced on the condition of the ignition system. A turbocharged stoichiometric CNG engine with a high rate of EGR air/fuel mixture dilution achieves the lowest emissions and highest power outputs while keeping combustion temperatures relatively low. The major advantage of lean-burn engines is that combustion temperatures are as low as combustion temperatures found on diesel engines.

We used to have CNG here in NZ but it faised out in the 90's for some strange reason, there has been talk og it having a come back here in NZ again being as most petrol stations still have most of the delivery equipment and tanks still on site just disabled.

Very strict rules and regulations regarding installation of CNG to a motor vehicle. Check this link for more details inc. tank testing every 5 years...www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi16.pdf

where do people normally fill these cars up? I don't recall seeing these at any servo.
That the automobile has practically reached the limit of its development is suggested by the fact that during the past year no improvements of a radical nature have been introduced.

Not to mention a percentage of public transport buses also use natural gas

The Adelaide MAN CNG buses have a naturally aspirated 12L engine that develops 170kW and 860Nm. The current MAN CNG buses have turbocharged/intercooled 12.8L engines that develop 228kW and 1250Nm...

Australia has abundant reserves of Natural Gas.

Recoverable reserves as at January 2001 were equal to 125 years’ supply at 2002 consumption level.
