What do you guys use for keeping track of km's claimable via tax.
Just a notpad or a computer program or something? I've just been using a notpad but GOD it takes sooooo long...
I was thinking of getting something that truckies use? As you can probably tell this is my first year i've been able to claim for Km's lol![]()
I use a log book. Most newsagents have them and they're pretty easy to fill out.
I print out my own self made logbook sheets, at the end of each month I take the written data and apply it to a spreadsheet. This spreadsheet keeps trac oil, petrol, servicing etc so come tax time I already know business use and exact amount Im claiming.

I started off using a log book, but it was painfull having to fill it out each job that I went to. So now I just claim 80% of my Km to my business as the car is used mostly for that now. If I go up the street to the shops, I will usually go to the post office or the bank so I can make it a "Business Trip"![]()

Yeh will upload it shortly.
At tax time I only use the figures within that spreadsheet. I also have it setup for personal use where I can track average fuel consumption, variations between branding of fuel etc. I dont hand anything in at tax time except the figures in my final summary sheet. If I am audited I simply print out the whole spreadsheet and attach every docket and original hand written log sheet.

I understand that but you still need to readily show how you come to that figure. Just because you do not need a log book does not mean you do not have to prove how you got those kilometres.
That being said, how many people who use a car for business use do less than 5000 km's each financial year?

Log book from newsagent.
I did this for 3.5 years in my 5 litre Calais.
I enrolled in a PhD at uni and claimed every single kilometer I did and the parking costs.
And I went to uni almost every day
Edit - I just remembered that I was claiming around 8,000km per year. It was awesome for tax purposes.
i've done it before for driving from my primary place of work to my second job
but it wasn't enough k's in the year to need a log book.
I just wrote down how i figured out the k's i'd driven and what the result was and then chucked the peice of paper in with my tax stuff for that year.
My vehicle is basically now used mainly as a business vehicle so if they need proof they can just look at my diary of jobs.
