Hi guys. I wanna get my motorbike license, but didnt realise that theirs a restriction on what bike you can ride on your L's. Anyways, i really like the look of YZF-R1's.... but basicallly im restricted to a 250cc bike and not a 1000cc bike.
Can anyone recommend a good 250cc bike? Something preferably Yamaha or Honda and that has the same style or looks at the R1's?
Thanks heaps
You might want to check those regulations.
Learner legal bikes are not just 250 or lower now. some 750s still pass as learner legal.

R1's are quick and should not be ridden by a novice. Take my advice get your self a 250 first get used to riding do a few track days and then consider the R1. Ive had my full licence for the past 10 years and mates have r1's GSXR750's R6's etc... And im still **** scared when i get on their bikes. Remeber a R1 will do the 1/4 mile in under 11 seconds out of the box with a good rider.
Try the Hyosung Gt250R or 650R, A Suzuki Gs500 or 650F, Kawasaki 250 Ninja, Honda CB400 if you are after a good first bike. There is plenty of stuff out there, why the hell you would want an R1 as a first bike is beyond me.
How much riding experience have you had?
Have a look at this, just to make you a little jealous....
My K7 Gsx-R 750
im not after an r1, i just like the looks and want something that looks similar. i will have a look at the regulations ey
in terms of riding experience, ive been riding dirt bikes for about 6 years, and yes i understand that their is a difference in riding types.
my understanding of the regulations was that it was 260cc or under, and it said that if the bike is below 1960, it can be up to 600 or something...
by the way- kawasaki 250 ninja are awesome looking bikes i must admit
yeah... any 250 is fine.... there all ****...
Get a 4stroke, find a race bike rather than anything inflated.... i rode a RGV250 throuight my L's... the equilvint of a road race bike. Full alloy and it was two stroke... one of the fastest produciton 250's.... still...
but it took a lot of tuning and annoyed me a lot..
I honestly don think dirt bike riding has anything to do with road race bikes... yes you can change gears etc etc... totally differnt bike styles and conditions..
cbr's are ok.. youll most likely drop it so buy something cheap and you'll not miss it...
aZk.

Probably serves him right, he doesn't know how to ride a bike to save his life.
A funny thing, he once put tyre shine ALL over the wheels, first corner he went around, completly lost it
ahaha!
The all new TATA Nano, India's $3000 low cost car, Runs on Chicken Vindaloo!
Agreed 100%, just get a small under powered bike and learn control etc. Its always to tempting to give it a squirt , and then its all over when you cant handle it.
Dirt bikes and road bikes are very different. Ive been riding dirt on and off for nearly 10 years. I will not be jumping on a roadbike any time soon and if i was to id be starting out small. The body stance on a road bike is completly different, affecting gear changes and brakes but thats quickly adapted. Its leaning into corners and how to brake that will change dramatically. Also a powerful roadbike will be completly different to giving a dirt bike a squirt. Start small and progress big.
LOL, I know someone that did that to their brand new Ninja 1000 (or 900 cant remember), polished it up took off and slid out. Funny thing was he had nearly 40 years riding experience lol.
If you come from a background of trail bikes why don't you get one of them to start on? XR's are excellent - practically indestructable!
If you like two strokes i'd reccomend an NSR150 in the road bikes, or the CRM250 or YZ250WR in dirt.
I think the Hyosung Gt250R as someone mentioned before is a TUFF looking bike for a 250...
honda cbr250rr, no ifs or buts about it, buy far the best learner legal bike, have the sport bike styling your after, sounds excellent at 20000rpm and there is that many of them they go for cheap.
as for the 250 rule, thats gone, its all power to weight, my 250 ISNT learner legal, and it proberly the reason why the law came in, easily as fast as cbr600's and the like.
2 stroke power baby, smells like your at a boat ramp when you start it up.
Not sure if I agree with all that, especially a 250 being as quick as the 600 CBR's? Unless its an RS 250 or something?
Weren't all the 250 CBR's four stroke?
You also go onto say the 250RR is the best learner legal bike, then turn around and say yours isn't legal? Do you have a 250RR or an Aprillia?

My Brother bought a CBR250RR for his learner bike its got plenty of go for a first bike,he looked at the hyosung 650s aswell but got mixed storys about theyre build quality & reliability. So in the end just decided to get a tried & tested CBR250RR.
never said i owned a cbr250, i got 3 mates with them, i learnt on a postie
i have a suzuki RGV250R which is the same as a aprilla RS250,(the RS uses the suzuki motor) and yes it 2 stroke and it is on par with my mates zx6r and cbr600, most races just come down to the launch, and if mine isnt in powerband it doesnt go no where,
also weighing in at about 60kg lighter then the bigger 4 strokes helps as well
my two babies

Agreed
I got myself a CBR250R for 3K with a flatspot and it was still quick. It scared me for a good long while but by the time I was finished with it could ride pretty well. The biggest thing you need to do is get used to the handling of a sports bike, then you can start applying more power.
As for your dirt bike experience not helping you I don't agree. You already know how to use a clutch, change gears, brake with your foot/hand combo and should have good balance on the bike. That is a lot of stuff you already know over a new learer. You probably know when the bike is sliding a lot more than a pure roadie would too.
A lot of the best track riders have big backgrounds in riding on dirt.
50LTRv8
if you want it just for the learning & restrictions etc.. you cant go past a cbr250 for an all rounder, although no 4 stroke 250 will be 'quick' unless its a 2 stroke.
Ive got a repsol 125 2 stroke that will eat any stock 250 cc 4 stroke in performance & handling.. in brisbane, can have it for 3500 with helmet.
actually if you want a tough 250 4 stroke instead of a 2 stroke, go the yamaha virago. alot of chrome & performance mixed for a good price, should pick one up for 4 grand.
is the pstie bike a ct110? i just got a ct185 and its not too shabby.. would love the one in the pic but looks a bit girly for my liking... but id swap my kick start for your electric dtart anyday...and that chrome exhaust looks a treat, do you burn your leg often or does it just clear it?
ha, yeah its a 2002 ct110, im the first owner after australia post...have no issues with the exhaust, clears the leg easy, plus where its closest to you leg it got a double layer heat shield, so it barely get warm
also no electric starts around here, both mine are kick, you dont win races with a heavy starter motors. lol
yeah there not too bad for a 250, mine got a leaking oil injector, when i ride it everyday you wouldnt notice it but when you leave it sitting for about 3 days or more, it gets oil build up, then it takes a good 5 minutes for it to stop pumping out massive amounts of smokeWe have the same bike!!!!!!!!
Mines soon to be black and silver though! haha
ALSO! it needs a new piston
gonna get an R1 soon though... over the 250 thing!
about 3 months ago my mate sold his cbr for a R1, and that thing is such a good bike, endless amounts of power
