Default Sneaky Tactics at BP Servos

Ive noticed lately some BP servos in Sydney City area have changed thier pump colours and fuel names, ie what used to be Unleaded and a Yellow Pump is now E10 (i was ****ed after i filled up not even reading the pump assuming it was unleaded as "may contain 10% ethanol" is in small print), and they are calling thier "Premium Unleaded" "unleaded 98" using the same colours as the old premium used to be, so unless I think its more of a con to get you to use ethanol mixed fuel without you knowing, and to choose Optimax thinking that it is now the premium unleaded, when in fact thier "unleaded 98" is the old premium unleaded.

I reckon its a big con, has any one else noticed this ? BP at St peters next to sydney park road is where i first noticed it.

this is common at a lot of servos in NZ, some only have 98ron and not 95 and just advertise it as the premium. sly, also at gull, they only stock the E10 95ron instead of the regular 95. that sucks too

I think that you should be able to make the choice (if you are willing to pay a premium) and that in order to do so the labelling of the product has to be accurate and not misleading. Just labelling the product as 'E10' is probably enough to be accurate even if the use of colour based branding previously used for 'E' free product is not.

I haven't seen what is being discussed but there are sections (probably 52, 53(a), 55) of the Trade Practices Act 1974 that would apply.

If you are truly concerned, the ACCC is the body responsible for enforcing the act.

The addition of ethanol to at least some fuels is required as part of a 2% (overall) ethanol content mandate for NSW that started from September 2007 and will become 10% in 2011, so get used to it. I want to see E85 available so it becomes worthwhile to do a proper conversion.

Not going to whinge to the ACCC, i just think the way they have done it is sneaky, some time back when Shell changed its colours and fuels it was well advertised with brochures on the pumps ! it is all labelled but if you were an avid BP customer you wouldnt notice untill you already filled up !!

they've being doing that for at least a couple of years. i thought it was sneaky when i first noticed it - it's easy to just pick up the yellow pump for ULP.

highly unlikely that it wasn't deliberate.

except you have to push a lever to use diesel that says 'caution diesel fuel'

The biggest scam that is unknown to people is that service stations are speeding up the pumps to actually give you less fuel! i dont feel like going into it, but if you dribble the fuel in from the pump you actually get more fuel in the tank than if you go flat out. Notticed lately that pumps are super speedy?

thats why i fill up a full tank when mines empty. if i fill up and the thing says i put in more than 60 litres, ill go in there and raise hell. thats never happened though, so i guess none of my local ones are cheating that way. sounds like crap

any trade measurement device, including petrol bowsers, must be certified for accuracy and is subject to random checks by fair trade/consumer affairs inspectors in each state.

you'd have to be pretty brave to install a dodgy fuel bowser and i reckon you'd struggle to find one even if you were dumb enough to install it.

You know how premium has that different smell then normal unleaded? i swear sometimes when i fill up with premium that normal unleaded is coming out.

A couple of servos in SE QLD have been caught out doing it. Putting normal unleaded threw the premium pumps and changing the premium price.

how about talking like a human being instead of a piece of crap. Do a search on the internet and theres plenty of information, just because something has been raised that you have never heard of doesnt make it false, have an open mind about things and at least hear my side before making a comment you immature prick.

And stocky if you had a read of the pages youd see theres no difference if the bowsers are in australia or in france. it has to do with temperature & expansion.

Just for the record i have done that low pressure pump thingo on my jetski.

It took me FREAKIN AGESSSS but i filled up a 60lt tank for ~$45 back when fuel was about $1.15 a litre, those were the days

The girl behind the counter actually asked me why i was there for so long, just said my jetski its a bitch to fill and none the wiser
