That is probably the best opening cermeony I have seen.

The olympics are great for one reason, it brings together pretty much EVERY country on the earth regardless of their differences. Now lets hope Kevin Rudd mentions Tibet and they shoot him.

I would agree with this except for a couple of things. A lot are on drugs for one. The other is that politics interferes way to much is another. I also don't agree with china hosting it either. I hope that the Aussies do well, just a shame that my chosen sport (basketball) will not get a medal.

yeh well i only saw the last half as thats when i got home from work lol (went till like just after 2 am) was pretty amazing though...the ending was good but i still think they went a little overboard with some of it.

lets see how Brisbane goes in 2024 if they host it then (was mentioned the other day that they were considering)

crap, crap and more crap. all this was about the chinese jerking there own chains. the games are suppose to be about bringing the world together. the opening ceremony was all about what the chinese have done. lets tell the truth here, torture, state sanctioned murder. china is a dictator ship. no better then mugabe really, they just hide the bad stuff better. they won the rights to host the games on the basis of improving human rights, free access to world media etc. it's all crap. china should never have had the rights to host the games until they had a "proven" track record of improved human rights.

the NZ commentry team had a chinese official commentator in with then that kept mentioning things that china has brought to the world. no doubt that the NZ commentry team were given a list of things that they must mention to get the rights to commentate. crap. total crap

Yeah I noticed that, rather then the opening ceremony being about the world coming together it was just about how great China is............

Olympics istrash these days, if anything they should have 2 olympics. One for the drug cheats and one for those who wish to compete to the best of the ability. Until then its a complete waste of time as who knows who's on what.

As an experiment in Puebla Mexico I counted how many people in the street I was taller than before I came across someone taller. I stand 5 10 and I counted over 100 people in a row without anyone beign taller. Did the same for my wife and shes 5 3 but also went well over 100 and then gave up. She's from Mexico but from an area with more Spanish and less native(Asian blood) Average height on the mostly natives would be 5 4? and 5 0 I'd say male and female, I guess it's similar in China. I'd say half the females would have been under 5 foot

p.s did anyone notice no matter how fancy and posh you make something in the Chinese red, gold and blue style it still looks like a tacky restuarant in downtown Melbourne or a 2 dollar shop

    Default The Han.

The opening ceremony was on a different level to anything that has come before it. I thought it was exceptional! I am glad that it was centred on China, I think the rest of the world needs to be reminded of the sophistication and depth of China's cultural history. It's a sobering thought when viewed in the light of China's current global economic emergence.

As far as the Chinese government is concerned, they're just like any other government... Perhaps a little less covert, but pretty much the same.

As for the Chinese people its nice to see them having a good time on the world stage. They are a proud people, friendly and eager to please. During my time in China I thoroughly enjoyed what the country and its people had to offer.

Now! If only they would shoot Kevin Rudd, Australia would be a much happier place.

Slept through the cermony, and couldn't care less about the Olympics.
All the Chinese nationals (bout 6 I work with here in Sing) thought it was great except for the torch lighting.

As for China, its actually a really good place to visit, the food is good and cheap (in the most expensive places) the people there like to drink and are a laugh when they're hammered. At least in Shanghi you can go to a club pay about $20 aussie and have all you can drink beer/wine and spirits. Wierd but I felt more free in China then I do here in Singapore which is BS democracy anyway.

Dissapointed I couldn't get a visa this month to go back for work....oh well Thailand should be good.

the biggest triump of the chinese people, the ability to "fake" everything. it has been revealed that some of the fireworks displays were faked using computers.
