    Default Shed doors....few questions.

Ok, well we've been at this house for about 13 years, and our main shed has never had doors. It sucks coz it gets dusty easy, and ya can't have any sort of heating device going when it's cold coz it simply doesn't work when the shed has no doors. And also, ya can't do anything when it gets windy.

I thought it was about time I made some doors for the shed, but....I don't know how to hang them, or how to make them. Attached is a rough pic of the shed, the gap to fill is bigger then the sides of the shed, so even if I make 2 seperate doors, if they are opened all the way they will hang out the end of the shed.

    Anyone got any ideas?

Also anyone got any diagrams on how to make the frame/s, and how to hang them? I got prices on some steel, 38x25x1.2mm x 7.5M is $23.70. The same again but 1.6mm thick is $40.70.....the thinner stuff sounds better coz it's pretty much half the price, would that be ok use?

I guess the doors themselves are pretty much just a frame with some diagonal bracing (or similar) in it hey?

    Cheers,
    Danny

    EDIT:
I want the doors to slide open, coz having them swing open will be a bitch coz they'd take up to much room.

A roller door would be to expensive.....but how does a tilt panel door work? Is the mechanism easy enuf to fab up?

Also, dunno if the size matters, but it needs to be 16x8 foot.

How much do you have to spend? Check out ebay or the local scrap dealer. You can get them for next to nothing second hand. They are suprisingly cheap new.

If you want sliding doors you're probably looking at a professional install, making the doors + runners wouldn't be worth the saving in price.
You could make bi-folds, instead of regular doors (so 4 panels, and each door folds onto itself).

For a regular door with that height and width, a single crossmember from corner to corner should be more than enough for it to keep its rigidity with steel.
Or as said before, get a roll-a-door. You can get them 2nd hand for less than $150.

Yeah I might go have a suss at the scrap yard in a sec. The shed has things in the ground where doors use to run along. And a few months back I caught up with one of the previous owners and he said it use to have doors...had a big convo about it coz he's a cop and he pulled me over oneday (he gave me a caution, he said it's actually 2 offenses having an out of date rego sticker on ur window, and not having the new one on there, we didn't even know each other till he noticed my address).

Not sure about my budget. I'd prolly spent $100-$200 on it, and the same outta my next pay.....I just gotta buy stuff coz I can't save, so if I buy little bits this pay, it will keep me going till next pay haha.

I just installed a few fluro's in the shed, and bought new air hoses and have run them through the roof to make it neater. Altho gotta redo the fluro's coz I'm getting a sparky to look at it, and he's gonna tell me wat I have to do, then he'll come back and check it. And yeah, at the moment I've used extension leads for all the wiring, but bought a heap of proper light and power cable to run through properly.

If the roller-door option doesnt work out, another option you have is to have a single door made to the size you want or can make work. Then fill the rest of the area with removable panels. It depends on how often you use that entire opening I guess. If its just for a small workshop or storing tools, that may be the cheapest and easiest option.

I went to the scrap yard and the guy had a roller door but he recently squashed it up to fit inside a car for when he scraps it.....he said I was a few weeks to late haha.

Altho he has a bundle of 36 lengths of square tubing. I think it's 40mm, it's not very thick by the looks so I'd say around 1.2mm, and they're either 6 or 7m lengths. It's new stuff, but been sitting for years outside in the yard so it's a bit rusty, he said I can have the lot for $200. Works out to about $5.50 per length. So yeah I'll grab that 2morrow most probably!

If I buy the whole lot, then I can make a heap of shelves to, and I also wanna make a trolley for my welders, and a tool trolley...it will keep me going for a while.

Yeah we store our tools in it, but also normally got a car in there to. My wagon is in there at the moment sitting in primer, and that's one of the reasons I've decided to finally put doors on it, coz the guy who's working on it only comes on weekends, and recently we've been having **** weather so he can't get nothing done coz it's to cold for priming and painting.

check ebay for a roller or panel. I just scored a 5m wide panel with remote and motor for 600. rollers are cheaper and easier to put up. You can tension a roller by rolling it where as the torsion springs on sectionals are killers.

Even with the right gear i have my thumb broken in 2 places, no skin on my hand and 9 stitches in my head from a torsion spring letting go. Strongly suggest getting a pro to do those ones, though if you can be sure they aren't going to break it's perfectly safe!!!

Shouldn't be hard to knock up a couple of 'barn' style doors though. Hell i have a pair here you can have if you feel like a drive.

sliding doors would be easy, we sell the track & carriages at work but you would be cheaper buying a roller door, as the carriages are about $30 each (2 per door) & the track is about $60 from memory for a 6m length. as for the doors just a simple frame with diagonal brace, just make sure you run the brace the right way.

I haven't been able to find any roller doors yet for sale. I bought my steel 2day tho. It's in better condition then I thought.....most of the lengths which were on the inside of the pack have a shiny steel finish....might have to paint them up b4 they rust.
