what are the weirdest/coolest ideas that you have seen on a car designed from factory? heres one i found at work. this is an Aston Martin fuel door. it has a mini gas strut! dont know whats wrong with a hinge and spring. why not i guess.
umm, 2.4 litre t/diesel transits use a water pump that is bolted to the block and driven as an 'accessory' which means it has 1 inlet hose from the radiator and 5 outlets going to various other component on the engine, BUT, it dosnt end there the pump's shaft/bearings use the engines oil pressure to lubricate, and has a vacuum pump bolted to the top of the water pump and uses oil pressure aswell to lubricate, which naturally has special gaskets to use and are not re-usable and have to be ordered separately to the pump.

3. Stuffing the 265 Hemi into the Centura. Dumb and deadly.
4. Replacing damage prone parts which used to be available separately, with complex, single unit assemblies which now cost a bomb, such as head and taillights. Good for the manufacturer, not so good for the consumer.
5. Steel welch plugs in the first VN V6's. By the time the VP was released, the General woke up and replaced them with stainless steel. Anybody who has had to replace welch plugs in their early VN will know what a mongrel job that is.
6. Tapered spark plugs in alloy heads. Tighten them too much and they seize, snapping off when you try to replace them and leaving the seized threads in the head.
7. Transverse V6 in Magnas and 380's, which needed half the engine dismantled to replace the rear plugs. Long life plugs were standard, but you still had to replace them eventually. Big bucks for a basic servicing job.
ford Telstar with a v6 (yes V6!) in it....had to replace an oil sender unit in it..... not even enough room to fit a screwdriver between the engine and radiator.... heat soak much~
putting oil filters where they can leak down onto the exhaust when u take them off and ass a previouse person said with having to take half the engine apart to change spark plugs

timing belts on some mitsubishis you need to remove the engine mount, and to do that you need to raise and lower the engine to pull the bolts out

You just unscrewed a large plug on the side of the box, undid a circlip, screwed in the puller and yanked. The clutch could be unbolted and dropped through the lower bellhousing. Simple to do and very quick. Not too many front drivers have such a simple system. Some Camira ideas were really very sound, it was just the build quality that was crap.
Then again, they also have the dumb idea on Astras, Vectras etc, that the timing belt has to be replaced every 60,000km. To do the job properly, you are also supposed to replace all tensioners and rollers. About $500 a time. Dumb.

Ford Falcon is the most reliable LPG car you can get.

yeah and if the earlier models didnt get the revised service schedule log book from not being serviced at holden, and they went for the 100,000km change, and the belt snapped in between the 60 - 100,000km area you need a new head and possibly a couple of pistons aswell as a timing belt.
and dont forget you have to replace the crank angle sensor when you do the belt because the sheilding on the wiring breaks off and start shorting out
