I'm a mining engineer and I know there are a few operators or other people connected to the mines.

    Check out this thread:

    Ask the Mineworker..

I specialise in underground, but soon may be moving to open cut for the money.

    Good luck.

I work as an electrical engineer, haven't done any work in the mine itself but have worked on crushing and screening plants at the mine and all the way to iron and steel production

My missus's brother in law is a mechanic on an open cut mine in NZ.They earn over $100,000 a year driving those big dump trucks. Its funny because you see females driving them a bit at the mine, they use them because they dont thrash them like the guys do.He is thinking of getting his wife to drive them for a year or so.

Im in the underground coal. I was thinking of going to w.a. for the cash, but when i looked into it, there only paying around the 110k mark for a driver and they have to work life killing 12hour shifts and they are under complete control of the company living on site and rediculously strict ohs rules, where one tiny slipup will cost you your job.
I earn more than that here in wollongong less than an hour from home and we dont have to do 12hour shifts.

It can be hard to get in as i found out, i did a small amount of travel abroad to get my start. But your best bet is to sign up with a mines contractor, like walters, delta, sss, ugm, theres a million of them and do some casual weekend work with them if you can get it, and you'll soon find where the jobs are, and get to see a few different pits.

my uncle works in a undrground goldmine for byrnecut mining. apparently u dont need no experience or HR licence to become a truck driver. They train u up in a 40 course. He said its 2 weeks on 1 week of which would be sweet i reckon. The 12 days arent as bad as they sound as the first and last two hours a waiting around for the mine to be declared safe. I cant wait to start working up there.

One thing to keep in mind,

All you blokes with zero experience most likely will not be walking into a 100k+ pay packet straightaway.

It may be 6-12 months on half that during probation and training, but of course this differs between companies.
