Fortunately i have a mate who was head mech. at our holden dealer who does all my work, he will come to me if i want so i am lucky enough to avoid taking my car into anybody i don't know.
Having said that, you should be confident enough to take your car into most dealers and not have to worry about hoon mechanics test driving your car.
Poor bloke, hope they do the right thing by him.
thats bullsh!t. id be so angry if it was my car.

i can see where your comming from but the problem is what if theres a problem found on the test drive, if its not an easy fix the customer will have to go home/work again they could be in and out of the workshop all day for every test drive. although this is unlikely if its just a service, but where i work we do alot of engine/gearbox replacements, modifications as well as services, if we had to wait for the customers to come in everytime we wanted to test drive a car nothing would get done. best you can do is find a mechanic you can trust.
I agree completely. Let the owner take the car nad bring it straight back if they notice something wrong
I think that if your replacing a gearbox or modifying something, fair enough but not if your getting a service.
The ppl involved were given the sack and possibly charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
They were def given the sack tho
Chev badges are an instant fail
LOL how many people take there car to the mechanic saying its making a noise when I turn the corner, use the brakes etc. and when they go to pick the car up the workshop always says they couldn't hear any noises so your car is fineSo I think the old test drive is a bit overrated anyway. Except when they've done work on the brakes.
But I feel for the poor B@#tard. And thats why I never take my cars to a mechanic.

Some customers dont want to know what goes on with their cars though. They're quite happy to drop the car off at 7:30 in the morning and then pick it up at 4:30, pay the money and drive away. If you dont want your car being driven, you can say so. But to say that there is never any need for a mechanic to test drive is stupid. Its like saying an electrician should install downlights, but not turn on the switch to make sure they work because they will be using up your electricity. You need to ensure that everything is performing as it should. Otherwise, the customer will come back, and you will get it in the neck for not faulting the problem.
At the dealership i work for, no apprentices are allowed to roadtest any vehicle for any problem.

A run of the mill service doesn't need a test drive. Obviously if the customer says my barake are making a nois, you'll need to replicate that on the road.

You sign your car in, you're agreeing to the work on the coupon to be carried out. A Road Test is part of that process. Dont like it, raise an issue with the service advisor.
Thousands of cars get road tested every day by mechanics, one major accident out of those, in a year is, when you statistically look at it, not even a blip on the radar. Its unfortunate for the person who's car gets ****ed up, but to say that all mechanics shouldnt roadtest vehicles because one clown crashed one car is like saying that all Commodore drivers under 25 are hoons.
