Thread: How successful is the Cars for Sale section of this forum?

    Default How successful is the Cars for Sale section of this forum?

    I have been glancing through the For Sale section of this forum and I'm surprised at the lack of interest shown in some of the cars currently for sale. A clean VY series one Exec, with S wheels, is on offer for $9800 with nobody interested, clean VT's less than $5,000, with SS wheels and apparently well cared for, with reasonable k'S, now on e-bay for less than five grand.

    I realise that these cars are selling in a highly competitive market and that resale values of Commodores have taken a hammering over recent months, but given that these cars are being offered by people with a similar liking for Commodores as most forum members and appear to be a bit better cared for than the average noddy-box, how many members have used the For Sale section to sell or buy cars and have you been satisfied with what you bought or the price you sold for?

    I bought my car from Reaper in the for sale section, price was right. If I were to buy another Commodore I would definately look here. I looked here just incase there was a Honda for sale for my GF too.

    In a short reply - people are getting short with the pennies. As the economy slows so does the purchase of "big cars". My dad has just paid almost 17k for a 2 year old Ford focus. I paid less for a 2 year old VZ.

    Big cars are on the nose at the moment.

    Havent purchased a car via JC but would if the time/cash was right.

    I certainly looked but i ended up finding my jem on carsales, certainly some nice cars in the for sale section, but as someone said, most people want small, efficient cars these days

    i reckon people sterio type it there 2 scared 2 buy off here because they think they have been thrashed but its prob better 2 buy off here as people take more pride in there cars and maintain them

    I prefer to buy cars/parts off of the forums here too, it's easy to do background checks on people "search" "username" "all posts by"

    It can be a long process but I did it to Jecs on this and several other forums when I was buying the engine off of him., it may sound a little rude, but hey, he checks out and so does that engine, what a buy.

    My next car will either come from here or broadford car sales, unless I come across someting private that is magically the right price, or my mate decides to sell me the VR manual

    I listed my Calais for sale on here at the same price I was offered for trade and nobody was interested at all. Then when I said I'd traded it and for how much people complained I didn't sell it to them...

    i had my car posted for weeks and weeks with little interest, sold it in the trader. i wasnt actively looking for a new car and nothing that i wanted ever came up. i found my new car on carpoint.com.au.

    i would def have a look in the for sale section for the right car next time and i would def post my current ride in there if it was ever up for sale in future. i think i would have better luck sellin this car being manual on this forum. everyone wants a manual!

    What ive noticed is theres alot of cars here that go up for the 'right' price (what there worth) then they get dropped to ridiculous prices and noone looks at them still?? i dont know if there all bombs but they look alright in the pics!!!

    Another thign you have to think about it is why do they want to get rid of it?? usually cause its been thrashed...

    if i ahd enough coin, id prob buy off here... as has been said, one day a car is say 10k.. then 2weeks later, its dropped to 8k. Just gota compare prices and do research.

    Hmmm...the VR for 800 bucks seems cheap at first then, after fixing something that should have been fixed BEFORE listing the car for sale, he bumps the price up another 150...not too clever.

    But it does demonstrate one point. If you are trying to sell an old Commodore (say VT and earlier), it needs to be dog cheap but still highly serviceable. From VX on, the inherent value of the cars seems to be too high for the forum, unless the car is something out of the box.

    It's the market at the moment.

    I bought a VX SS in July last year for $21,000. Spent about another $3-4k on maitenance/upgrades throughout the year. And sold it for $14,000 last month. It's a real buyers market at the moment, especially on 8's. Only got one serious inquiry about the thing and had it on the market for 2 months. I sold the car through these forums though, only calls I got from carsales/carpoint were dealerships offering me $7000-8000.

    Quick way to lose some coin. I'm sick of cars, I've lost about $30,000 just on resale value on them over the last 4 years or so. Just ended up getting me a little 250 to get me around for the moment and saving for a CBR1000RR

    Hahaha - And you think cars have ****ty resale - bikes are just as bad if not worse! You are right though - it is very much a buyers market when it comes to V8's at the moment. Which means that there are a lot of bargains to be had, plus (especially if you don't do many km) the fuel bill is usually only slightly higher than a v6.

    My experience is that, whilst V8's and large cars generally are being heavily devalued, even decent late model four cylinder cars are losing heavily too. I purchased a new Mark 5 Golf Comfortline in February 2005, for $35k on the road. I believed that as it was a premium four cylinder vehicle, it would hold its value better than stuff like Camrys or Astras. Wrong! After less than 3 years, because the Golf proved to be too small for me and lost all passenger and storage space when our grand-daughter's child seat and stroller were added, we decided to trade, and went back to the Commodore. Trade in, with 63k on the clock? 21,000, and only after the usual haggling. The Golf sat in the dealer's yard for about four months, at $26k before eventually moving. (The bastards always want to make a killing, don't they - why can't they be satisfied with a reasonable profit instead of trying to get returns of 25%?

    Lesson learnt from this? No car is immune from heavy depreciation, it's just the market perception of what the car is worth and fuel prices at the moment have most buyers running scared.

    All euro cars depreciate really fast due to the taxes imposed on these cars. In real terms taht same golf is worth only 14k(off the floor) anywhere else in the world. This is why it ****s me to tears to see ford crying for more money. Let the idiots go broke, lets see BMW's etc selling for real market prices. So really, the car hasn't depreciated at all, it has simply succumb to real world pricing, it is the fact the government have made a huge buck out of you to keep our **** poor car makers in business.

    Anyways, I'll advertise the Senator on here in the coming months, I know for fact though that it wont sell through this website, most people who make comments in that section are dreamers.

    Bikes have ****ty resale value? A bike thats used and over 5 years old won't depreciate 40% in one year. Most commodores I've ever owned have gone pretty close to that mark with escalating fuel prices. And even if bikes did depreciate at that rate, losing 40% of $8,000 is nowhere near as bad as losing 40% of $25,000+

    Losing $1000 or so on a bike a year I can deal with. Losing up to $10,000 per year on vehicles that were not purchased new I can't.

    Bikes only have ****ty resale value if you drop them, or rack up alot of km's. Insurance is cheap, maitenance is cheap, fuel is cheap, and they're more fun than a car on the road.
