Sounds very very sus. Some one made a boo boo by leaving any trace of old service details that had the K's on it.
I think the K's can be changed by just swapping the cluster for one with lower K's on it.
Gday all,
i have recently bought a vx commodore duel fuel with 102 000kms from a dealer and was going through documents and service records that where left from previous owners and found service records for factory fitted lpg tank, last service on tank states odometer reading was 110 500kms back in 2004, it could just be a mistake, i havent contacted lpg service centre yet, but wondered if anyone knows do dealers have ability to change odemeter readings as i understand from other posts they cant do it after 100k, is there any sugestions so i can find out if ive been done over!
cheers

this has happened to my family before
we sold off are vs to a holden dealer with 375,000 on the clock
few weeks later i was just browsing around and found it at a diffrent car yard,
so me and my old man went and looked at the car to which we discoverd the k were wound back
they denied they had done anything so we ended up running home and got some paper work
next thing we know we had are vs back for $1000 and them begging us not to tell

in a vt/vx it would be as simple as changing the instrument cluster
It's pretty hard for dealers to cheat on km's because when you hand in a transfer of registration (buyer) AND notice of disposal (seller), the cars km's are listed on the document. An owner on the other hand, it is much easier because if you have the car for a few years, it's just a matter of simply winding it back just before you sell it to a mileage that is marginally higher than when you bought it.
has anyone seen k's been clocked back on a VS dash. takes 2 seconds to do. plug in, enter in new amount and wolah. and you've got a dash that reads 100 thous flat.. lol.
Yes easy to do if you have the little programmer thingo.
The process has been offered to me when chasing a L3 cluster with the correct K's on it for the V8 sedan several years ago. Cost just $150 he said.
Purchased a complete cluster for $56.00 within 2,000kms of the correct amount (129,000kms) - close enough for me and $80 cheaper + full set of guages and globes.

there is a way to tell if the cluster in a vt vx has been swapped, from the factory they have the last 6 digits of the vin programmed into them, if a dealer has fitted a new one the dealers security key number will be in it. if the vin doesnt match it has been swapped.
very few places have the software to alter these numbers but it is possible.
the dealers tools cant alter the odo if it is over 100km in vt onwards.
earlier ones need the programming tool, some dealers have it. the early ones can be set to anything using this tool.
Takes me back to when an EA falcon i knew of with 703,000klms on the clock was detailed and another cluster with under 150,000klms was fitted.Car sold very quickly and was clean enough to get away with it.

also a chance someone stuffed up when they wrote it down. Worth looking into though.
I hgave noticed this on the scheduled service reciepts in my car, it went from 126,000 km to 110,000 in 6 months. I guess it doesnt matter now though. My odo has sat at 255,537 for almost two months now.
In NSW, the odometer reading is recorded each year during the roadworthy inspection and it is then recorded by the RTA. If the following year showed a reduction in distance from the previous year, alarm bells ring immediately. This effectively prevents an owner from winding back or replacing an odometer to any great extent. There are only two ways you could put big K's on and not have them recorded. The first way would be to do it within each 12 month period, say by disconnecting the speedo if you drove large distances regularly, so that the increase in the odometer was substantially reduced from the actual distance travelled each year.
The second way can only occur during the first three years of the car's life, when annual inspections are not required, so theoretically, you could do huge distances in that time, then replace the cluster before the first inspection was required.
in qld Armstrong Holden i think it was got caught changing ks'...massive fine and got shut down
