Default second hand carsalesmen and dodgy rwc's

recently (2 weeks ago) my brother bought a VU SS ute from a second hand car dealer.

i think the roadworthy that was done on the ute before the sale is dodgy as!
i was under the ute today trying to solve a knocking sound in the rear end and realised it had a straight through exhaust system (probably cat-back), and the exhaust has a few holes in it. how is this roadworthy?
also we found the problem of the noise from the rear end, it seems the left hand rear shocker is stuffed, its quite loose, and the outer tube rattles on the inner tube (if that makes any sense) and is loose at the top of the shock.

so from this, i dont think this guy did a very good check on it. my brother has no idea who done the roadworthy, so what can he do? go to the place where he bought the ute and complain to him? or should he get a roadworthy check from a close friend (making sure to check over everything) and take the results to the car dealer?

any opinions would be great thanks

It is under warranty, so return it and have them fix it. You have 3 months to have these issues fixed. If they refuse to do it, take it to reputable suspension place and have them confirm it is has been like this for some time, then report to Vicroads that you feel th RWC was dodgy.

Can you pm me what yard it was?

ask at the place of purchase... in fact, go straight to vicroads and tell them, it's all a pain in the arse but it's worth it to get these rogues to straighten up. Vicroads will be able to run the code on the certificate - does he still have the transfer papers? that should have the code for the rw place.

he didnt get a copy of the rwc. when i went and saw the dealer today about the problems (which he has agreed to fix, suprisingly), he said he has a copy of all the transaction papers etc for my brother.

The defective items that you found may be just the tip of the iceberg, given the dealer's quick response in fixing the problems.

Unless you are very sure that the rest is A1, get the vehicle assessed either by the racv or another rwc tester that you have some faith in.

Ive acted for people that have been in your position several times, in fact one dealer was situated 30km from their rwc tester....suss!. If the inspection reveals other defects, typically the dealer may just claim its just that rwc tester's opinion. Easy out here is to call their bluff and ask whether they really want the vehicle to be assessed at vicroads, hence risking the licence of the rwc tester that the dealer has a more than cosy relationship with! Present them with the list of fixes needed and indeed the bill for the inspection!

a roadworthy from a caryard is completely differant to a rwc for a joe blo at a mechanical shop. Defectable cars get sold every week and DO NOT get repaired to the mimimum requirements 90% of the time with used car deals.

Also, in this day and age no warranty has to be given on used cars, only your standard cooling off period. The max you will get from a regular used car lot is 3 months warranty.

commsirac: the ute was given a full check over and another rwc was given with the list of problems found, and thats all they found. said they changed alot of things including disc brakes and pads, and other items, so maybe it was a genuine mistake.

    but then again, maybe not..

Car yards have been getting dodgey RWC's for ages.
No1 rule - Never trust a used car salesman!!

Mum got her car from a car yard, 4 bald tyres, undersized rotors, and a few mechanical faults/things not up to scratch. She fought and got most things fixed, didnt get the tyres, and when parts needed to be ordered, they said they wont arrive to after the warranty so she will have to pay for labour, and no they wouldnt give us the parts. We gave up as they were just getting worse and worse. Same time my sister bought a Pajero, 4 bald tyres, massive crack in the windscreen, and lights not working.... Its amazing how these cars passed the RWC so easy, but the same RWC tester knocked us back because one power window had a dicky switch on the VN.

[LATE EDIT] The car dealer is now out of business anyway... Karma

Ring vicroads within 30 days of RWC being issued and mention that the RWC is dodgy and state your problems. As long as it is within 30 days something can be done about it.

they arnt always dodgy, things can go wrong with-in 30 days. and some dealers do get roadys before the sell the car if they know the car will sell quick. it makes them look better when they say 'ill have the car detailed and registered in your name and you can come pick it up after lunch'

Lets not forget these people when we have wanted to get a car changed into our name for a "quick fix".

Buying from a dodgy caryard, is no different to buying from a dodgy private seller. You always have the option of getting an RACV check or similar before purchasing. If they will not allow that, then move on.

ive been through this before when i bought my vq staesman from sydney, the car had slop in the front end, and the only solution to the matter was to have it inspected by a nsw approved pit, if the car was infact unroadworthy they wernt going to let me leave or drive it until it was roadworthy, pain in the ass.

Even though that process was going to settle whether the car was rw or not, it took a chunk out of my ass for the time being before they contacted the dealer in sydney, he got it repaired, then got another roadworthy..... that would of been at least 2 weeks without the car. In the end, now i know why so many cars in nsw are dodgy.

Car dealers reg the car, and for it to be transferred to my name or habve a rwc written, a half ass version of the rwc is carried out which doesnt include actually 1- drive the car and 2- have a decent look to see if its roadworthy or not... all nsw dealers are obligated to do is have a mechanic do a quick look over it and pass it on, as the rego is still active and simply being passed onto me, DODGY

Thats why theres so many cheap cars in that area, there all ****ed.

Heard storys of a yards over here in Adelaide which took a car/s through the pits,it was a dodgey as car.The guy was pretty cluey getting it past though put chalk on the engine number so it was clearly visible = less time looking around the motor,Drained a fair bit of oil out of the sump to stop it leaking & just idled it through. The inspector said the tint was too dark & had to be removed never was though & i guess the car was sold to some unsuspecting family.

A few yards wont let RAA on theyre property to inspect vehicles either.

who knows what else was wrong with it.

I allways get a full inspection before i buy a car its what $170 odd dollars but saves the hassles.
