    Default Ps3

    Hey,

I've just ordered the new 80GB Playstation 3. Was just wondering about the HD & Blu-Ray etc. I have a 42" Plasma which is HD "Compatible". Therefore I have a set-top box for my HD channels. Does Blu-Ray use HD? I don't understand how all this HD stuff works. Would I still be able to get full quality of my Blu-Ray etc? with the TV I have?

The TV was a handme down or I woulda got HD built-in.

Edit: From my understanding, I should still have full quality of a blu-ray even though it's not HD built-in. Just not 100% sure.

There are 3 types of definition. Someone correct me if i'm wrong...

    - Standard Definition (DVD)
    - High Definition [1080i]
    - Full High Definition [1080p] (Blu-ray)

I would say your TV being "compatible" would not be Full HD, just normal HD. You should notice an improvement from blu-ray i would say.

Yeah I'd bet you TV is 720i (maybe 720p) which is fine as there are no PS3 games that I know of that are any higher than that.

As for BRD, the playback will be fine. Just set the BRD playback settings in the PS3 to be 720 and not 1080.

    Hope this helps

its likely that your plasma is capable of 720p, most "HD" plasma panels are. but without being a true HD panel which is capable of 1080p, playback of blu rays wont be at their full definition. nothing to worry about really, it'll still look pretty mint (better than dvd anyway).
as for the games like CSP mentioned - there are some that are done in 1080p/i but not many, probably about 90% are only 720p.
you'd want to run component cables from the ps3 to your tv to get the best definition your plasma is capable of.

so what is standard DVD? If my TV can handle 720i/p. Just so I can kinda compare how much better it is. Like will my blu-ray (on my tv) be twice as good as standard DVD or will it be like .... nothing lol. Like is DVD 350i/p? XD so I can say Blu-ray is 3times better than standard DVD. Just so I know what I'm missing out on and if it will be noticable.

Mate there are far too many variables, right down to the type of cables you're using to be able to say how much better than DVD your BluRay experience is going to be.

most standard dvd setups will be viewed in 480i/p. its depends on a few things, but thats the normal resolution. the biggest difference you'd notice straight away viewing a higher resolution is just how clear and crisp the image is.

to answer a question from earlier in the thread - ps3's have hdmi output, but its not really any use if your tv doesnt have an hdmi input or the capability of 1080i/p, which im guessing would be the case here. its likely the that component cables would be the go in Deutschers' case.

    Hate to inform you dude,

Standard analogue TV is 640x480, so 480i
dvd resolution is 720x576, so that makes it 576i. *some sources say it is 704x480P. Check Wikipedia here.
Minimum High Definition TV in Australia is 576p - I think SBS use that.
Enhanced Definition is 1280x720, so 720i/p
High Definition is 1920x1080, so 1080i
Full High Definition is 1920x1080, so 1080p

Can be checked from Wikipedia, scroll down to find out HD stuff, or CNET, or even eCoustics.

1080i and 1080p are both high definition.

The only difference is that one is interlaced and one is pure.

There are some ps3 games that are 1080 eg gran turismo prologue. Even at 720 games look mint. Normal tv is 480 or 420 from memory

    Hate to inform you dude,
But Australia uses PAL, so technically analogue tv is 576i (768x576), but due to overscan (more so on CRT TVs) it is closer to 480i.

And also, most DVDs are 16:9 480i (852x480). Pretty much all standard definition plasma TVs are almost this exact resolution (854x480), go figure.

And those DVDs which use the uber wide cinema aspect aren't even that big because they use the same horizontal resolution, but cut down on the vertical resolution.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:V...Standards2.svg
    Analogue TV - PAL
    Regular DVD - WVGA
    "HD Compatible" - HD720
    "Full HD" - HD1080

    Hi guys,

Just received my PS3 !!! after LOOONG wait! So now I got the new 80gb! Anyway, I hooked up to the TV with the cables that came with it.... I watched a blu-ray and wasn't very impressed :P it looked just like a regular dvd!!

I ended up reading the manual from boredom and figured out the cable you get with the ps3 is a standard hdmi to rca (red, white, yellow) and that can only produce 576i. What is the point in doing that? people like me don't normally read the manual! So now I've ordered a Monster Cable PS3 Component AV cable for $60, which can produce the 1080i/p so then I should see a difference (hopefully!).

It just stupid they supply you with the crap cable! It's not like someone is going to buy the manufacturers cable directly from them so they aren't making an extra few bucks from it or anything. Just means more running around for me!! It's like selling a PS3 without a controller!!! or a PS3 without a power cable.

well not everyone has a tv with hdmi input(s) (or component), so thats why sony only supplies the standard av cables with the ps3. you'd be surprised how many people only use the standard definition with their ps3 (pointless a bit i think, wasting its capability) and are still content.
if they were to only come with a hdmi cable then alot of people would be screwed - not being able to use the ps3.

It would be nice if they at least supplied the ps3 with a component cable, instead of composite, so you can actually view stuff in HD. That was my one major gripe when I purchased the PS3. HDMI cable you can understand why they wouldn't supply one, but component, every tv pretty much supports it. It just makes their product look poor to the unaquainted.

Hi, got another problem with the PS3.
I hired out a blu-ray from the video store the other day, put it in my PS3 and the screen was continously jumping and there was no colour... I returned the movie and got out a different movie.... that worked fine... yesterday I brought Never Back Down on Blu-Ray and once again it's jumping and no colour. Anyone experienced this? I'm using the standard cable that comes with the PS3 (I'm thinking it's a cable issue). I've played PS3 games on there and they work fine.

Do you have a decent quality HDMI - HDMI cable yet? First step!

What's your TV? BluRays play at 24hz so if your TV has any 100hz motion plus **** the like of Samsung, Sony etc it causes BluRay playback problems.

    P= progressive I= Interlace
    1024x768= 720p/1080i
    1920x1080=1080p

By the way picture quality depends on the brand you choose ie.. a soniq etc..
1080p will look like garbage next to a pioneer 1080i and so on.
If its a hand me down I`m guessing its a 1080i max jobby, what brand is it???

For a good quality cable try belkin silver series, I`ve got a link to get em cheap somewhere I`ll get back to you.
P.S If you dont have a HDMI port Try VGA as an alternitive it converts the signal from digital to analog then back to digital witha 1.0% loss just like Component
but the resolutions and possible compatiblity issues sorted can be the pay off. (HDMI cables do not convert digital signals to analog then back therfor are 100% digital)

Welll..... the make is TEAC XD haha. It doesnt have a HDMI port therefore I can't get a HDMI to HDMI cable (which woulda been prefered). I have read the PS3 manual and says that a HDMI to Component will still give me the 1080i/p. I've ordered "Monster Cable PS3 Component cable" already. I was just wondering if that would be the problem or not.

Look`s good, but look at any options for VGA (PC TYPE INPUT) for a comparision, I don`t know if sony makes one as I`m a XBOX man.

    Gooday lads,

I want to buy a game from ebay, it's from the UK. I was wondering if its possible to play a UK game on a Aus PS3? I believe the UK uses PAL aswell. Anyone know before I buy it and it doesn't work etc? I've heard that PS3 games are region free but movies etc aren't.
