The only station ive seen people checking tickets is Melbourne Central.

The only reason i go to the city is to drink and im usually all covered in chains, studs and spikes so if they want to detain me be my guest. I usually just buy a ticket though its like $2.50.
yeah dont see any reason why you cant just run for it. and thats only if youre stupid enough to get caught. all you can do is wait by the door of the front carriage. if you see them waiting on the platform about to hop on, just get off that train, or if you see them near the gates, jump the fence lol. theyre getting tricky though with the plain clothes wearing guards. damn tickets are costing me 80 a month lol.

The OP didn't say anything about having a valid ticket. I was under the impression they could only ask for I.D IF YOU CAN'T produce a valid ticket. Otherwise tell them to **** off!!!

i also know they have the right to ask to see a valid ticket once you've left the ticket bearing area, but thing is, if i'm done travelling for the day i generally leave my ticket on top of the boomgate things, in case someone else wants it. i'd be fair shat off if i got booked for not having one after trying to to some good.

Its funny my mate has been caught 2 or 3 times now for various things, unvalidated ticket, feet on the seat etc etc. Everytime you get caught down here, the fines go up. He could buy about 5 demirt points with how much his fines cost now haha.

Here in Melbourne on all the trains/trams/buses there are signs that tell people what Authorised Officers (ticket inspectors) are allowed to do.

That is demand to see your ticket. Ask for your name and identification to prove who you are if you are travelling without a valid ticket. They may also arrest you to await for police to assist them in confirming your ID if they aren't satisfied. They may also seize any dodgy ticket you're trying to use as evidence.

As for touching, to effect an arrest they can if you're not going to play the game. They can sit on you if need be.

Well I just joined and didn't think my first post would be un car related.

In NSW Transits (Grey nurses) can ask for your ticket, and if they ask for ID because you dont have a ticket, and you don't have ID, they can cut you some slack and let you go or detain you until police arrive who have the power to make you give ID.

Tranists have no more power than a normal member of the public. They can use reasonable force to detain you. You want to play hard, they will play harder. Police harder again.

With the signs that they say inspectors can ask for ID I dont know but it's the same as going into any shop that has a sign that says "you must show your bags upon entry / exit from this store." That is complete BS, you don't have to show anything. Unless they SAW you steal from the shop, then they can detain you. You can pack your pockets full fo stuff, but until you LEAVE the store you are not committing an offence.

All these little bits of legislation and law are great to know your rights

ticket inspectors do my head in, bunch of wankers

they are all on powertrips, my mate was 25c short, so she asked if they had a ticket machine with an eftpos like at the train station, there reply was "no we dont, get off the tram and go get change, or we will book you"..... i just gave her the money, bunch of wankers.... seriously

bus drivers are usually good blokes/ladies but last time i caught a bus (about 3 years ago) they didnt even care if i had a ticket......

I think it would depend if you had a valid ticket or not or if you were carrying out an illegal activity. Valid ticket and just minding your own business, then I see no reason why they need to see your id.

My opinion would be to buy the right ticket in the first place. Don't do the wrong thing and have nothing to worry about. Having said that the morons that NSW cityrail employ as guards is astounding. They're no better than bouncers at a nightclub. They love to pick on those who can't defend themselves and when something really does go wrong they can never be found because they're hiding, not wanting to deal with a situation.

I cant believe so many people are unwilling to cough up the couple of dollars to use the train. I love the logic, 'its a **** service, Im not paying' WTF? I would love to apply that to everything.

Oh yeah the service at this resturant is ****, Im not paying for my food now. etc....

& The showing your bags thing, YOU do have to do this, if you dont want to show your bag, DO NOT ENTER the store, it is right of enrty that you will show your bag on the way out, that is the way around it, its not about the bag checking law as such, its about what you were advised upon enrty, by entering the store, you have consented to a bag check. Dont want to do it? Then dont go in.
