What do you want to do with it? You can buy a point and shoot and attach a wide angle attachment, not great quality. You could buy a Full frame sensor body and buy a wide angle lens to suit, for a decent setup your looking at 4k plus just for body and one decent lens. You can buy a crop sensor canon and buy a 10-22mm lens.
The questions you need to ask are:
What do you want to shoot?
What quality do you want?
Do you plan on adding to your kit?
Whats your budget?
The list is endless...

Around the $500/$700 mark, just to take pics of the cars,

Well you wont get any wide angle setup of decent quality with that.
I would probably go with maybe a Canon 400D Twin lens kit, that way you get an SLR that has a 17mm lens in it(multiply this by 1.6 as it is a crop sensor camera). From here if you like you open up options to get a wider angle lens say a Canon 10-22mm or a Sigma 10-20mm lens(16mm wide).
A 400d can be picked up for around $1000 with a twin lens kit. Personally that would be the way I'd go, buying a point and shoot is a waste of money.

There are a few semi decent cameras around that price range. You can pick up a Nikon D60 for under $700 with twin lens kit. A Canon EOS 1000D will set you back a little over $800 for a twin lens kit, and as minux said, the EOS 400D for around 1k.
As far as lenses go, the kits you get will be good for starters. you can always build on those as you go.

The EOS400D is a great entry level DSLR camera... And listen to minux when it comes to photography![]()
u know whats good a 120 dollar cam from dicksmiths hahahaha
Even a good compact unless you're really serious about it.
If you get an SLR I can guarantee you that you will end up spending alot more then the cost of the twin lens kit. It just keeps going.
Purchase yourself a good compact or even a digital that's like an slr, still with the manual functions but no interchangeable lenses.
storm chaser?
