It depends on how a heavy smoker you are. But apparently after quitting for 12 weeks or more, your lungs are nearly back at full capacity. That being said, it only takes one mutated cell in your lungs and you're heading down cancer street. So the longer you smoke, the more chance you have of going down that path.

In short yes, your body does recover to some extent. But even one a day is putting your body at great risk.

Some chain smokers never develop smoking related disease, then others develop them after only smoking for a month or two.

My great grandmother smoked a packet a day for over 80 years. Dear old soul died peacefully in her sleep.

For me i believe smoking isn't exactly healthy, but neither is walking around sydney, if you are going to get cancer, you will get it regardless. I used to smoke in the army, a bucket load, never effected my fitness(nor anyone elses I knew in there) until I injured myself, then it ****ed me up, so I gave up. Now have one here and there(3 in last almost 2 years) I just like the flavour some of the "exotic" cigarettes have. I haven't had any issues with health and feel about as good as I used too.

I am a strong believer that exercise is what helps keep you healthy regardless of what you do to your body, if you stop exercising everything is a lot worse for you. This is only a minux theory not a doctors

Close...... If you are not pre-disposed to cancer then chain smoking 24/7 for 100 years will not cause it. If you have a gene (or whatever) that pre-disposes you to cancer then smoking will greatly increase your chances of triggering it. The more/longer you smoke the more likely you will be.

Exercise is the best thing that anybody can do for themselves. There is no argument that smoking will diminish lung capacity and the blood's ability to carry oxygen (amongst other things). Of course if you are otherwise uber fit then it may not matter.

My Nan smoked heavily all her life, as did her husband in a tiny London home and both died from non smoking related illness..

A relative of my Nan above never smoked a day in his life, but died of emphasemia

I believe it has little effect on what you do to your body (in this case, smoking), The only reason everyone is always going on about "smoking causing cancer" is because you never hear about the person that "smoked a packet a day for 80 yrs and died peacefully in their sleep" or other similar stories. Today's media is VERY bias...We're going to become another America if it continues...this went wrong, that went wrong, does anyone care about the things that DIDN'T go wrong?

    sorry for not reading

smoking does damage to your lungs, and over time it can heal back to full health, however the amount of time and quantity you smoke dictates how long it takes to heal. My father used to smoke and gave up when my brother was born 21 years ago and his aerobic capacity is fairly bad, yet is in great health

If you think you can be a social smoker for a while, quit then be back to full health within a month it doesn't work like that, smoking as all negative habbits have short term and long term repercussions.

Has anyone seen the film Thankyou for not smoking?
its a fictional movie but it gives a pretty warped view on the whole debate, and its quite funny.
