    Default Part-time Job in Melbourne?

Hopefully i will be attending university down in melbourne next year, either in Footscray, Burwood or Bundoora. I am living off-campus, and unlike alot of uni kids, i aint having mummy or daddy paying for me living down there. so i will need a part-time job.

So im asking, what kind of job should i look at? And how much will it pay? hours? qualifications? I wouldnt mind doing something around cars which doesnt require qualifications, or sport. I should have a strength and conditioning coach qualification before i head off.

    So any ideas?

mate your best bet would be to try Drake, Adecco or some kind of labour hire company.

They might send you here and there but its good pay

Yep you can explain to them the hours that your able to work and the situation your in. You could also ask for weekend work only. It pays more in most cases, enough for accomodation and food thats for sure

Possibly look into a factory job on a night shift. Then you can still do your classes, and work, with awesome money.

Going to one of those labour hire places Ozzie said will get you something like that. Thats assuming you can handle repetative no brainer tasks.

You should be set then. Loading is 30% so its much better than what you'd get on a normal daytime job, and alot of people don't want to work nights because of family/kids etc

    Shift loading

Meaning if your getting $15 an hour on a normal shift, you will get $20 an hour for a night shift.

Try local ISP's or other call centre jobs. Most run 24/7 these days and you could do either the evening or night shifts along with weekend shifts. Lots of these positions call for Uni students as they know they need their shifts.

Console operator work also is an option, as once again it is shift work, as is a sales assistant in a 24 hour convenience store.

Other options include bar and waiting work, if you have a few spare dollars and a day or two before you start uni, get your RSA (responsible service of alcohol) badge from TAFE which will give you the edge over the positions when applying.

Good idea, its fun... But the customers you get sometimes are complete wankers.... Even worse when you refuse to sell them alcohol

could always try supermarkets that are not huge e.g IGA, foodworks etc but only do that as a last resort because the pay is absolutely crap

Do what every other uni student does and work in fast food or retail.

The point of uni is to get a better job, not have one while you study... if it pays bills itll do.

    its not hard.

    aZk.

(I know cos im at uni...)

Yeah, not to mention late nights dealing with drunks and having the smell of beer over you.

My older brother stacks shelves for woolworths at night time and he makes some good money out of it (he done this through uni and he has just finished and still doing it until he finds a job). So thats something on the tables i guess

I was thinking (i have been doing a lot of thinking) and i wouldnt mind working in like a sportspower or rebelsports, so sport retail. And i wouldnt mind working at like a clothes shop either.

As for fast food, as a future career of working in the health/sporting industry, i dont want to work in fastfood. its so contraindicating.

you do put up with wankers, believe it or not.... i finish work at 11pm and the worst wankers are at about 8-9ish.... and dont worry about the smell of beer being on you, it doesnt happen unless
    1. your next to a intoxicated person for hours and there breathing on you (which you should of refused them sale anyway, so it wont happen)
    2. you/someone else bust a can of beer when its going in/out of the fridge, and it usually doesn't smell for long

thing about retail is, some days you get 90% good people..... other days you might get 90% pure wankers...... unpredictable lol

a few things ive noted, im by all means not a union boy in fact i dont like them much at all,

but generally businesses that have union attachments have a little better pay - apparently

after 10pm woolworths has 50% loading, im 18 and getting 20.50 on sunday morning.

I'm 24. Just a forklift driver. I've been doing it since i was 17, the highest i got paid was $33 an hour flat rate, for 12 hour shifts.

Where i am now is by far the best paid in the counrty (even the same company pays better here than interstate). No there not any jobs going. But get a forklift license, and you'l' increase your chances of a higher paying job.

Thats only partially true. its 30% after 10pm on saturdays (all day is normal rates), sundays is 50% except after 9pm its 100%.

I recommend working part-time for Woolies, like i do, they pay good, and are very flexible (at my store) towards, uni classes & exams and even sporting commitments.
