    Default Trams: part 2

My last post caused a few irate comments from some 'enlightened' motorists. One in particular by someone named Minux just shows how ignorant people are in regards to trams.

He stated that he liked to just prop in front of a tram to annoy the driver. Yes, this happens often. However a lot of drivers fly past a tram then on to the tracks to do a right hand turn; regardless of how fast the tram is travelling. And regardless to the fact that they're unable to complete their turn because of oncoming traffic. More often than not a tram driver then has to apply the emergency track brake to stop. If a tram has a full standing load of passengers imagine the chaos this causes on board; even injuries on occasion.

Ahh, the idiot tram driver is back.

Lets re-quote what was said shall we.

The tailgating thread (s) made for interesting reading and reminded me somewhat of something I used to do when I was a tram driver.

I used to get tired of idiot motorists that used to scream and yell at me because they couldn't get past my tram. Because we're reprimanded by management for running too early, sometimes tram drivers have to 'drag the road' and more often than not this really annoys some driver's as they're unable to get past.

Occasionally, just for fun, when I knew there was a driver attempting to get past me and he couldn't because of parked cars, I deliberately used to drive really, really slowly and when I saw a gap up ahead I'd speed up just to frustrate the motorist even more. I used to figure I may as well get abused for something I'm enjoying doing, then get abused for just doing my job.

    Flame away
And my response to your idiotic ways of driving a tram around the city the way you do.

I love when trams do that to me, a bit of extra boot then slow down and take 5 minutes to turn right. Worse of al, the passengers know why the drivers doing it and start hurling **** at you.

    Wanker.
So perhaps you may want to re-think how you word your post next time. You are right though, when I come across arsehole Tram drivers like yourself who speed up to stop cars from passing, I will slow down and make a right turn in front of you just to return the favour. It is no wonder there is so much road rage out there when people deliberately block people from moving forward.

Good attempt at trying to flame me...

I was on a tram in Melbourne CBD once, some meathead guido decided an illegal u-turn in front of a tram was a good idea and the tram hit his precious VY ute, borderline ripping off the rear end.

Then his mate and stupid himself board the tram and start having a go at the tram driver, and some bloke next to me says "how the HELL don't you see a tram?"

Anyway, i had to give a statement, and in the end the fool got what he deserved.

I'm not trying to get offside with anyone. I've been nothing but polite with my posts. Even though I've been called all sorts of names.

I considered myself a good driver. Eventually (after many frustrating years) I responded 'in kind' See original post that Minux was kind enough to include in this thread.

I've got stories about what some Melbourne motorists get up to around trams that would make your short and curlies straight

If it is so important not to be early, try sitting at each stop for an extra 30 seconds like bus drivers do. The passengers understand, and it doesn't involve deliberately slowing down every simgle other person on the road, creating frustration and potentially unsafe situations.

There you go, polite feedback on how you can do your job without being a wanker about it

Thing is, you are deliberately creating frustration on already overcrowded roads. The way you said you drive is completely idiotic and un-called for. I consider you a pathetic driver based on your original story, your actions are that of a 10 year old and I thank christ you are no longer doing this job. There is already enough idiots on our roads in vehicles they should never be allowed to use due to mentality issues.

....and I quote 'after many frustrating years'. I guess I just got tired of being called names, being spat at, having things thrown at me. And most of all people deliberately holding me up by sitting in front of me because they reckon that their destination is more important than an overcrowded tram with people also just going about their day.

.....and god forbid if I dare sound the gong

Btw, I'm still in the job, and I drove for nearly twenty five years.

Why would they be angry? You close the doors, drop your pedestrian signs, turn off your flashing lights and cars go AROUND you, wouldnt think it was that hard, rather than trying to cause danger to motorists and your passengers by accelerating and slowing down like a dimwit.

Hahaha I am glad we don't have trams with wanker drivers around here. Then again I reckon if we did they would get shot.

I agree, it is annoying when people deliberately hold you up. In fact, I think the only thing worse than being stuck behind a slow car is being stuck behind a slow 20m long tram who thinks it is funny not to let anyone past

And yes, as long as you are stationary with the doors closed, people can go past

I think angry tram drivers are funny...

    Why?

Because all they have is a bell!

    "Damn that driver!" *ding* *ding*

"What? he's ignoring me?!" *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding* *ding*

I love it... Reminds me of Christmas.

In the original thread, both Minux and you acted in ways to frustrate the other driver. Simple as that. If you act like a twit, expect to be treated like one. Trams are great in Melbourne. I wish we had them here in Canberra instead of dicky busses.

trams are a bad idea and a classic example of something from the old days that aren't able to be gotten rid of.

buses do a much better job than trams. one of our local councillors recently made this very logical and reasonable point, but was shouted down in the local paper by the usual, reactionary public transport freaks.

as winston churchill said, democracy is the least worst of the bad systems of govt we have.

LOL yeah that is pretty funny. In Prague they go nuts with that little bell. When Skoda drivers and Tram drivers collide!!

on major roads where there are parked cars in the LH lane and a tram in the RH lane, nothing can get past.

vicroads has recently tried to fix this by extending clearways on these roads, preventing people from parking in the LH lane. however councils are fighting it in court, as shopkeepers think it will drive customers away.

an easier solution would be to use buses, that pull into designated bays and allow traffic to continue past.

Only have a bell? I was on a tram in Elizabeth Street about 10 years ago and some clever bunny decided to do a right hand turn from the track rather than doing a hook turn. The side of that little Torana opened up like a tin can. I stay out of their way, they WILL hit you!
