i was just wondering what the jc members opinions on street art/graffiti are? ,
do u personally think its art or just petty vandalism?
do you personally think there is a right and wrong place for it?

to save my ass i do not condone any illegal acts of any kinds...

Been done before, possibly resulted in a locked thread?

I think some graffiti looks awesome, and some is jsut ****.
I enjoy when on the train checking out different graffiti, also love the ones that make you go "How the **** did they get up there to paint", but I dont support anything Illegal, but will appreciate whats already been said and done.

I don't mind PICTURES but when it's just pathetic tagging and dripple then no...There are also plenty of places around that ALLOW people to spray their walls as advertisements...

I think there is 2 classes of graffiti, there are graffiti vandals- thats anyone who sprays their **** on any property they do not own without permission of the property owner then there are graffit artists, they create art using spray cans in appropriate places. I despise graffiti vandals but don't mind graffit artists. Anyone that has a bit of talent as an artist can make money through their art, retards that spray **** over other peoples property are not artists they are just retards with a spraycan and no brains.

I sent a driver to Preston tram Workshops to bring back a tram that had just had its turntable re-welded. When he got back, as it had been there for quite sometime, I asked the cleaner to give it a good going over.

He rang me back all excited and told me to come and have a look. I kid you not the whole side from driver's cabin to driver's cabin had a huge awesome looking mural on it. Other side was covered in tags, though.

Tram had to be sent back to the workshops to have a complete new paint job. In my mind a complete waste of the the mural painters' time and tax payers dollars.

Some graffiti-ists are truly artists, it's just a pity that they have to use public and private property, without permission, to display their talents.

Mindless idiots who think that tagging everything that stands is clever p*** me off. Neighbourhoods look like bloody ghettos. If they are caught, fining is not appropriate for a penalty. They should be sentenced to hundreds of hours communty servicing cleaning the crap off walls, telegraph poles, garage doors, trains, electricity sub stations and everywhere else they scrawl this rubbish.

I love the Graffiti Artists, and agree, the little dip****s with spray cans taggin **** is pointless as hell, most graffiti artists that put their work onto something like the tram.... Know its going to get removed, they take a photo, a few people get a look at some great art, and then its painted over, they seem unphased by it, and the worst thing is when they come back to take a photo of a mural, to have some ******** tags all over it, thats just a complete lack of respect for an artist..... Like claiming ownership of a photo....

i agree with you guys, there are two different 'taggers' the guys who do a bloody good job- spend HOURS on their art work, which looks great, and theres the dip ****s who just scribble on the wall- we had an excavator COVERED in tags after if was left over night on site :P

In ACT there is legal graffiti walls set up, particularly under road bridges. Some of them have some awesome artwork on them but too many prats go and spray their tag over the top.

Speaking of PRATTS and graffiti.. I don't know if anyone read this story about Steve Pratt

DIY MP 'told' graffiti he removed was art | NEWS.com.au

Basiclly he took it upon himself to clean off and paint over a legal graffiti wall even though he was told it was allowed to be there and that the person who did it was actually paid to do it!

I think some of it could be called art,

For exmple... Where they have pro's paint on walls that they dont want to be tagged.

As for the s**tty graphiti goin round I think only d**kheads could have done it. Not only does it look pov but the crap they put into spraycans these days they deserve to die.

love seeing cool and intersesting pieces, but i hate ****ty scribbled tags.
dunno how i'd feel if it happened on my wall, i guess it might depend on whether it was any good or not.
the the thing that ****s me most of all is when you see a really cool looking piece, like up beside a train line or something, and some rival crew (most likely a 13 year old who thinks they're hard) has tagged some abuse **** over the top of it

immortality: graffiti is pure vandalism, they should be shot now before they progress to bigger criminal acts which they all do eventually
    wrong. you're a fking idiot.

graffiti requires skill, control and a creative mind. all attributes of a regular artist. i completely agree that a lot of little sh!ts do write on walls for the wrong reasons but for others they use it as a way of promoting their name. believe it or not but in that culture it does get them respect.. and honestly - it has stopped people from doing worse things. some people use graffiti as a way to let off steam, as an escape. some use it to create an alter ego or whatever.

i also agree more legal walls should be put up but it will never stop the amount of illegal stuff that happens. the illegality is what completes the art form. artists have to work under pressure, have to be fast and precise to get things done without getting caught, especially when painting near train lines or on a train car.

i love it but i have since moved on and don't really have the time to do it anymore. and no, immortality - i havent moved on to armed robberies, stabbings and rebirthing cars yet..

here's a few pics of my work from early this year and last year.
