If the cheque is made out to you, then get it fixed wherever you want. If the cheque is made out to the place that did the quote, you'll have to go there.
Why didn't you just get the quote done closer to home?
A guy at work recently reversed into my car causing minor damage to the front bumper bar and bonnet which will all have to be resprayed. His insurance company phoned me up recently and said they will send out a cheque for the amount on the quote.
The question I want to ask here is can I take the car to a panel beater closer to my home or do I have to take it to the place where i got the quote. To put it in another way will the cheque his insurance company will be sending me written in such a way that I could take it to another panel beater of my choice.

The cheque should be addressed to you, you can do what you like with it.
I remember a few years ago someone ran up the back of my mums falcon, you couldnt notice the damage, and the insurances repairer quoted 1500, needless to say, we kept the 1500 and didnt bother with the repairs as after a cut and polic you couldnt notice it except a scratch in the plastic about 2cm long.
In fact the opposite is true. It should be addressed to the repairer. The insurance company are sending a cheque based on an amount quoted from a repairer and its intended use is for repair of the vehicle in question.
I know if I were the insurance company, that's what I would be doing.
To the OP, you could be lucky and receive a cheque made out to you.

I've never known of anyone having it addressed to the repairer, that is unless a quote is done and the repairer is paid directly, which happens in some cases. When you are the 3rd party in an incident, it is always a matter of getting a quote with a selected repairer and a cheque issued to the owner.
You can do whatever you want with the cheque.
i would imagine you could spend it on fast women if you wanted, it's your money.
under law, if someone causes you loss, you are entitled to compensation. they have no say over how you spend it.
having said that, it woudln't surprise me if there were strings attached in practice. insurance companies are very shady.
when someone ran a giveway sign ans hit my vr commodore on the guard i got a cheque to my name, so i went to wreckers got another guard and bumper bar, then spent the rest on a laptop
Thanks for the replies everyone.I was in a rush to get the quotes due to work commitments.
Waiting for the cheque now.
Aha excellent.
3rd party claims are payed directly to the owner of the vehicle, i just got a cheque for 2200 for damages to my ford so i went to pick a part and got a light for $38, got a guard for free and painted it at work.
you can do whatever the **** you want with the money
I was quoted about $800 for some repairs a few years ago, so thats what the insurance company sent me.
The panel beater ended up doing it for about $500 and a few beers at the pub one night.
Once they send the cheque the money is yours, do what you want with it
