Sorry for the new thread but I'm not reading through the massive old 'new p plate laws' threads.
What are the differences between P2 and the old p-plate laws in vic?
As far as I can see it is only 'power-weight' is now 'no perfofmance mods', and it is now 3 years long, as opposed to...well whatever it was til you turned 21.
By some VicRoads magic, I have ended up on P2 instead of the old laws. Now I have to go through the appeal process to get them to change it back (hopefully), but god knows how long that will take. Also - does this make me one of the only people in Vic to be P2 (not old laws)

yer if u already had ur license on the 1st july this year then you become a Green P plater. You are governed by all of the laws you were before, including the Power:weight ratio and your Probationary period ends on the date printed on your current license.
IMO the reason that all license holders were given Green plates was to stop confusion with new RED plates and current license holders.
I dont think that there is an appeal process and if their is you should not need to use it because your laws have not changed.
Find more at arrive alive.
Remember, P1 = red, it goes for the first 12 months of licensing and there are restriction
P2 = the next 3 years of the licensing
If you already had ur license you will wear green plates for the remainder of your p period but do not have mods restricts, v8 restrictions or passenger restrictions
Yeah, I know all that, but I had my license suspended over the whole changeover time and when I got it back I wound up on P2, which they tell me is different than everyone who had their P's beforehand.
If this appeal works it won't matter, but when I have talked to vicroads, some of them tell me I cant drive my v6 with cai and exhaust (coz its so powerful lol), and some say I can.

EVERYONE WHO HAD THEIR LICENSE BEFORE JULY 1 IS A P2
weather u were suspended or not
I have a mate with a lx hatch torana with a cammed 253, he drives it on his P's no problems. He was suspended for 15 months for speeding. When he got his license back it was after the change over but he does not need to worry about the new laws, just like you
Who told u that are restricted? Wait, was your license canceled or suspended? Was it just given back or did u need to re sit the driving test?
P plate Drivers & High Powered Vehicles : VicRoads
and under the 'new restrictions' part for post July...High Powered Vehicle Restrictions
As part of Victoria’s graduated licensing system, new restrictions on driving high powered vehicles apply to all drivers who obtain their probationary licence after 1 July 2007.
The current and previous power to weight restriction will apply to any probationary driver who obtained a licence before 1 July 2007.
So they say I can't drive my car, as when they gave me a new license it has "P2" on it, even though I was told it shouldn't, so I have to appeal to get it changed back. From this date a probationary licence holder cannot drive a vehicle if it has:
* An engine of eight or more cylinders;
* a turbocharged or supercharged engine (except diesel powered vehicles);
* an engine that has been modified to increase its performance
As far as I can tell that is the only difference though...what are my chances of being able to plead ignorance if I get pulled over?
EDIT: So as far as I can tell according to vicroads I got my license after july, but somehow skipped P1. I can't get a straight answer out of them. They just get as confused as me

on your license what is the date of expirary on ur license?
and and the quotes u got are from a website made before the change over so when they say "
The current and previous power to weight restriction will apply to any probationary driver who obtained a licence before 1 July 2007."
they are referring to the P/W ratio.
When were u issued your license? and when you lost it did u need to resit the test to get it back?
^^^ As asked above....
Did your license get suspended or cancelled?
If it got suspended, i would assume they actually issued you a new license because you are now on the new P plate laws... otherwise they would just send you your old license back. If you got cancelled and you had to resit the test after July 1, I'd say your definitely on the new laws.

It was suspended originally then cancelled coz i was a couple days late handing something in![]()
They made me go get a new license (didn't need to sit any tests) because apparently I didn't hand my old one in. Then a few days later they sent my old one back to me - hey thats clever since apparently they didn't have it!! *mutters profanities*
I rang them when I got the old one back (Prob expiry 2009), and they said the new one is the one to use (P2 end date 2011).
Was originally issued my license in 06.

well if it was canceled then you are on the new laws. thats what punishment is for.
Yeah, but I have been told by VicRoads (since they obviously know what they are talking about) to appeal against being on the new laws, so that is the process I'm going through now.
Original question was....is there any difference between P2 and old laws.
As far as I could see it meant no performance mods (as opposed to power/weight), and no hands-free (thanks adamc11).
Just looking for confirmation, as I know there is some confusion, and I can't get a straight answer from vicroads. Don't really want to find out on the side of the road with flashing lights behind me

Yup new laws.

QUOTE:
New high powered vehicle restriction will prevent probationary drivers from driving vehicles with:
* engines with eight or more cylinders
* turbocharged or supercharged engines
* nominated high performance six cylinder engines
* engines that have been modified to increase the vehicle’s performance.
Exemptions will be available and offences will attract a fine and three demerit points.
Also see this for the high performance 6 cylinder cars you cannot drive, and those that are exempt: http://www.arrivealive.vic.gov.au/node/197

if you are licensed under the old laws then u are covered by the old laws, if you are denied the use of the old laws and u are a P2, then u cannot drive high powered cars, v8's or forced induction cars as well as no mods. There are some laws regarding the use of phones etc. But nothing that will effect you more than the no v8, FI no MODS
So that's pretty much it? Thanks for that.
If this appeal falls through then I have to apply for a high-powered vehicle exemption (for a pretty much standard n/a v6 lol) and I'm pretty much guarenteed that since I was allowed to drive my car when I got it.
Should tell them it's supercharged so I can bolt one on when I get the money![]()

i am covered under no mods, and all that **** as i got my license after the new laws were brought in. I was driving a vs calais on 17's, cat back, high flow cat, roller rockers, then later on it had a Twin throttle mod. I was pulled and if ur attitude is ok then they usually dont even look. That said i do have 100% driving history with no suspensions etc. Im also only 18
If your exhaust isn't loud, then you should be okay. Doubt they will look for a pod. As long as you drive sensibly and your nice to the cops, not a smart arse, you should be okay. Just don't drive like a moron.

find out whats happening with vic roads, good luck
I don't like 'look-at-me' loud exhausts anyway, and I'm looking for a cheap mandrel bent catback to quieten it down a bit and get me a bit more poke. I don't drive like a tool, and very very rarely get pulled over so I should be fine.
I might go down the big cam road again, I miss the power my old car had, and even with the lumpy idle i never got pulled over in that either

If I get stuck on this new system I will be able to get an exemption to drive my modified car though, and as far as I could see there is no place on the exemption form to say how much it is modified.Originally Posted by adamc11
Even then, if I just say it has a cai, extractors and an exhaust, I could go with a mid-sized cam and a bit of head work and still be alright

or just dont try to break the rules. Seriously
Well according to vicroads if this appeal is rejected, I can file another one asking to be able to drive my car. Since I was allowed to drive it when I bought it and would be disadvantaged otherwise every vicroads person I have talked to (which is a lot) have told me I'm pretty much guarenteed this exemption.
I'm not exactly sure how this would work but I assume it would have to stay under the power/weight ratio, and I would probably have to say what mods have been done. So I should be able to mod it a bit and keep it legal at the same time.
Until this whole process is over though, I don't think I am allowed to be driving my car at all, so I have been borrowing housemates cars as much as I can.
CAI is the holden one
