Motorists in some states are enjoying long-awaited relief at the bowser, with prices dropping to their lowest in a year.
In Sydney, fuel is selling for as low as $1.16 per litre at some service stations.
The lower prices reflected the cut in the world oil price flowing through to local suppliers, an NRMA spokesperson told Seven News.
They were expected to remain low for some time.
Price watch website Motormouth also recorded an overnight price drop of about 2 cents in Adelaide, to $1.32.9 per litre.
Melbourne's petrol prices are the cheapest since October last year, below $1.30 a litre, and regional prices have dropped, with further falls expected over the next week, said David Cumming, a spokesman for motoring group the RACV.
Victoria's lowest fuel price is at Doncaster East, at $1.28 a litre.
Geelong, southwest of Melbourne , has the lowest regional price at $1.32 a litre, also its lowest price in a year.
Other major regional centre prices tracked by the RACV include Ballarat at $1.40, Warrnambool at $1.43, Bendigo at $1.39, Mildura at $1.49, Shepparton at $1.44, Wodonga at $1.43 and Traralgon at $1.46.
"Tomorrow in Melbourne the average price will be below $1.30 and by next week no country area should be above $1.40," Mr Cumming told AAP.
Several factors have caused prices to fall, including the price of crude oil coming down and Singapore's oil stockpiles increasing.
These resulted in a 19 cent reduction in the wholesale price last week, which was now flowing through to bowser prices.
"It's been too slow," Mr Cumming said.
"The public feel they've been ripped off over the last few weeks. They've seen crude oil prices come down without bowser prices falling."
Mr Cumming warned that OPEC was already threatening to restrict oil supply to push prices back up.
"There's no guarantee these prices will stay."
Nonetheless, he said, the lower prices should last at least the next two weeks.
However, Melbourne's usual mid-week cyclical price hike would still occur, pushing prices briefly back up to about $1.38 on Wednesday.
"Motorists should fill up early this week and they'll be pleasantly surprised."
In NSW, petrol prices are also falling.
Sydney's average bowser price for unleaded was $1.32 on Monday, with the cheapest fuel at $1.20 in Sans Souci in the city's south, the NRMA said on its website.
Pump prices in Blacktown, Fairfield and Prospect in western Sydney went as low as $1.25, but in regional NSW prices rarely dipped below $1.40.\

why the **** did i buy fuel yesterday at 1.38 a litre, oh thats right i was off my chops
woo yeah, 129.2 for premium!
i think its really wrong what been happening in our town (nowra) prices are usually at sydney's price or a tad lower but of late regular hasn't budged off 1.50 for the last months, the day before i payed 1.61 for 98
i also find it funny that shell's website used to show the price breakdown on petrol at the pump, like how much goes to profit, how much goes buying, shipping etc, i went to look for it a couple of weeks ago and funnily enough its no no longer on the website. any one suspect they dont want to show price gauging?
