I guess you should KNOW all the road rules for your licence before driving.

donno if this will help but once you lose the 4 demerit points you get put on probation, no late night drving and given 1 year for that, or you can choose 3 months loss of licene, you get 1q point for the 1 year, thats how i ended up llosjing mine, took the 1 year probation and wasnt paying attention to my speed.

Most states have the probationary year.

Keep in mind, if you do anything wrong in that year, your punishment is double what it would've been if you just went without your license (ie, if it was a 3 months loss, you'll have to have 6 months without it, and so on)

You have the ability to 'gain' 4 points agianst your license whilst on your P's.

When you get a fine, say speeding, which incures 3 demerit point, you also lose 1 point for breaching your p conditions.

Then you have the option to go on a 1 year good behaviour license, in which any offence results in double the original lose of license (which i think is ment to be 6 months)

Do you need to be told when your car needs its oil changed?

You should always check for rule changes or at least look on your states transport site to know of any changes or any amendments to changes.

If it was 6 before they came in, it would still be 6 now, as far as I was aware they do not "backdate" law changes.

Yeah in NSW at least they always run campaigns along with this kind of stuff including tons of media coverage, letters in the mail, notices on the website etc. You really have to be living under a rock, or just not give a damn, not to notice.

Also most P-plate changes don't backdate, so for example if you were allowed to drive a high performance car when you got your license, you're still allowed (unless you get disqualified and start again), or if green P's didn't exist when you got your reds, you didn't have to do them.

The only exception to this I can recall was the zero-tolerance alcohol laws (used to be 0.2 BAC, changed to just 0). And again, there was tons of awareness campaigns to make sure everyone knew the score.
