Default RBT Blitz on melbourne CBD

So i heard on the radio today that police are having 8 booze buses policing the exits from the city center tonight and tomorrow night.
What i want to know is why they tell people your doing this?
And what do people think about this sort of thing?

I know i'm sort of being a hypocrite for helping spread the word but i think it would be better not to let people know as your going to catch more people who are stupid for doing this. Letting people know might act as a deterrant for some of these people but whats going to stop them next time they choose to drink/drug and drive?
To me its a bit of a tough call as some will be bound to say that by telling them that your going to be out in force you might have just saved someone's life. But i'd like to think that if you caught them now, it more make a larger influence in stopping them from doing this sort of thing again.
Also why dont they do it saturday aswell?
There was something else i was going to add but ive just had a brain fade i'm it'll come to me later

Police don't want to catch people drink driving... it's not like speed cameras and revenue raising, they don't want people drink driving at all.

It would be interesting to see the stats on repeat offenders, some may learn after their first offence, but how many will do it again anyway, and think i'll be right.

These programs are supposed to be prevention methods. By telling people of a Blitz you prevent them from drink driving in the first place. If you catch them, it means there was a stretch of road they were driving on whilst drunk which doesnt help anyone.

Its like Speed Cameras, they are supposed to be prevention tools. By placing signs around the place and by putting face cameras around you are creating awareness of them in action. If they were just hidden away in bushes, you are just catching people which is clearly revenue raising as it doesnt PREVENT the action happening in the first place.

yes but it might prevent it happening again, but someone that desnt go drink driving 1 night doesnt mean they wont go another, and just cause they dont speed that 1 time, doesnt mean they wont later, but if they lose their license or get a large fine odds are they wont do it again.

The less drink driving the better. The more deterrent/enforcement the better.

Close mate lost his brother because he got into a car with a drunk driver. It ****ed him up. Nothing good to be said about drink driving, read my thread a couple days ago if you need any more convincing Some sobering reading

i think losing your license and a fine are a good deterent, people will still drink drive , they just wont go the way they know where a booze bus is

Yes a fine and a license suspension will deter people AFTER they have committed the act. If people know that there are police PROACTIVELY on the streets trying to catch these people, they will be less inclined to drink drive in the first place. Yes theres always going to be the odd one whos gonna risk it and do it anyway - and there where the fines come in. But for most people knowing there are coppers doing blitzs is enough to deter them.

The idea of telling people that they are blitzing is so people dont drink drive in the first place. What good will the fine do if 200 meters up the road hes already hit someone crossing the road. They both work hand in hand, you have to have something the driver is scared of loosing, ie his freedom. But that alone is not going to stop people. You need to give people the impression that the coppers are lurking in the streets waiting for you and they will be busted.

Also, it's not like that tell you where they are going to be so you can plan your route home around them.

All anyone knows is they will be out in force, and if you want to run the gauntlet, theres a good chance you'll be caught.

Went past 4 on my way home last night, Hoddle st, Tennis Centre, Port melbourne (entry onto the westgate) and Williamstown rd (exit from the westgate). The first 3 must have been on smokeo, cause they wern't pulling anyone up, and the one on williamstown rd, had traffic backed right up.

    no its not.

Hiding them is more effective.....because there will be those that come on forums such as this or go down the pub and whinge about the ticket they got, then the word gets around that they could be anywhere and people start to drive at the speed limit "everywhere" instead of just where they see a sign "speed detection device ahead" or a patrol car in the rear view.

You want the police to be proactive catching people red handed one by one in squad cars......how much tax are you willing to hand over so every 10th car can be a patrol car?

....back to the matter at hand, they aren't sticking signs up, "breathylser in 3km" so you can park the car and wait till your sober, the flashing lights and stuff are there so the drunks wont actually run them all over.

There was one guy in Geelong who was caught 3 times in one night.

How is it even remotely fair that someone doing a burnout will lose their car on the spot, yet drink drive till your heart is content and you can just keep on driving.

    It is an utter joke.

Just over 60 people were caught last night in the blitz, out of some 11,000 they said they tested.

200,000 people were tested in a similar blitz last year:

Last year, a similar operation in Victoria tested nearly 200,000 motorists, catching 989 drunk drivers and 13 drug-affected drivers. A further 6034 were penalised for speeding.
.5% of those tested were over the limit.

Got the stats to say what limits people were over by?

Seems like a massive waste of money to me.

Guys i was out in St Kilda to get a kebab around midnight and these were the locations of the drug and booze buses.
Cnr St Kilda rd and Carlise St
Cnr of Alma rd and St Kilda rd
Cnr of Chapel St and Dandenong rd ( both ends)
Cnr of Hotham st and Dandenong rd
Plus there were cop cars on almost every corner checking for speeding drivers....

Its called RAID (remove all impaired drivers)

I got stopped in all of em even though i just pulled out of one of them next to each other.
One copper also said that its illegal to have my fog lights on and my boost gauge. He said that since its a non standard accessory it can be defected..... a bit confused myself....
