Default I know it's hard to believe...

But yes, i did pay for my car, and yes i did pay for my insurance and rego.
Why is it that the past 2 weeks i've had 14 people (at last count) talk about me just within earsight about how it'd be nice "if i had parents who'd buy me a ute like that too."
I actually had a person at TAFE last block try and give me a lecture on how i should buy my own things...
In this day and age is it a shock that young people can own nice stuff WITHOUT the parents paying for it?

personally, it doesn't worry me if parents go out and buy their kids fancy cars. there's a guy at gatton uni who got given a blue SSZ ute after finishing highschool - that's a touch overboard i think..
I've just gotten a bit wierded out - 14 people in two weeks is crazy

I disagree on that. In this day and age it's normal for younger people to buy cars houses with their first/second jobs now.... The rest are jealous of you tell them to eat ****.

I had a hand-me-down/timeshare arrangement with my folks when I got my P's, meant I was driving a car older than me.

I got a job and saved up and bought my own car (and insurance, rego etc etc - all 100% mine). I was always jealous of rich kids who were driving brand new Mercedes C180s etc, but when I got my car I did have a feeling of satisfaction that I'd earned my own way, and that meant a lot to me.

I think if you have a clean, recent model car, and P-plates (especially red ones) people will assume "(s)he's driving a fairly new car, fairly new cars cost quite a bit, P-plates are young and haven't had time to earn that much, ergo it's either a) gift from parents, b) bought on a loan" both assumptions end up with the person low in the opinion books.

If you're in the above category (new car, P-plates) you're just going to have to live with that image for a while - or stick a sign in the window "I PAID FOR THIS BIATCH!"

people thought mum and dad bought my car but they didnt, you just go along with it, A guy at highschool was promised a new monaro if he got a good score in yr12, he did, and he got a brand new monaro.

Blew me away! I went through the local rag and found 2 exec VY commies for Under 12K & A VZ SS For under 20K!!! You can get a Bloody munro for around 25K (wich is what i want to get for our next car) Just amazes me how quickly cars drop in price!
and yeah to the Original Poster lol i paid for my first car, it was a POS But it was Mine!! In my later years i bought a VL commy on finance and paid it off ect i then wanted to get something a little better, so i started looking @ Getting the Calais and was going to go through the same Finance Mob (as i had built a good rep with them and paid my loan out early) But My Grandmother in law (who is rich lol) said she would lend my wife and i the money if we wanted it and we could pay her back so we did not have to pay the extra fees/interest with the normal finance! but to me i don't see that as being the car bought for me as we had to pay her back and also we could have done it ourselves but we where lucky to have some family help and save some cash

Amazing what loans can do, they dont even want to know your job details these days all they ask is how much you earn check you havent got a bad credit history and here you go, there's a $20,000 car at some high interest rate and you'll end up paying $30,000 + back and by then your car will be worth $10,000

i was 16 when i bought my vs, it was 2400 paid myself in full, when i was 17 i bought my vz which was 1 year and 11months old, paid for in full 18,500 by myself, i bought a motorbike 3 months after that for 5,500,

this was all in my first year of my apprenticeship, people ask me how much debt im in, their shocked when i say i have none, you just go without, scrimp and save, then buy what you want when you can comfortably afford it,

Thats Why i knocked back the XR6T that i had been approved for! The loan was for 20K But the interest was an additional 20K! So i would have payed $40K for a car that had 120,000 on the clock when i bought it and was 2nd hand ect, talk about robbery lol! Now if i want something I just save up for it

I'm 19 next month. I got a loan out for 5k just so i could go about getting a credit rating (advised by the parents that it was a good idea) Which pretty much covered insurance stamp duty and rego. Paid for the rest with cash - quite a nice feeling!

Your parents are misinformed about 'credit rating' is a good idea. Your ability to pay isn't what a bank is looking for. They like people that default so they can charge more fee's and interest.

On Topic, i got a loan for my International. Was my own loan, and was payed off just over a year after i got it. Best decision i ever made, otherwise i'd still be driving around in a 3L VL.

I got a $5K loan for my car, I had saved enough money for the car in months beforehand but weighed up my options and decided to spend the money I had saved on some decent c amera gear I was itching to have for a long time.

I would be able to pay this loan back in under 6 months, but the minimum term is 12 months, if you pay it back in less than that time period then you get charged a massive fee, presumably to make up their lost interest. Including interest + service fees etc over that 1year period, I will be paying back around $5600. Paying an extra $600 over the next year has already been totally worth it, over the option of missing out on my camera and buying the car outrigh myself. I guess it's all up to what sort of time frame would benefit you most; is saving $600 worth waiting another 6 months for my camera? Nope

My first car was only $800 including rego, so it's not like it was a big thing. This car was only $5K, so still not a big thing, but it's MINE

Join a credit union. I pay as much or as little (the minimum) that i want. No fee's for paying extra, and no fee's for early payout.

anz do loans like that nathan, like mine. no early pay out fee's etc. and if you pay it off early, the extra you paid for the interest over the term of the loan gets paid back to you.

I had a loan with BankSA and they had all sorts of **** conditions. Early payout fee, couldn't pay more than $5000 off early. In the end i copped the pay out figure, just so i wan't stuck paying their interest for another year and a half.
