Default where do i stand when it comes to mechanics?

Well i have had my vr v6 in at the mechanics for about 13 weeks. It went in for a rear main and to figure out why the box wasnt working.
Within the first 2 weeks they changed the rear main, had to replace the box and found it had no oil pressure. so they pulled the engine apart to find out what could be the problem.

I rebuilt the engine fully myself but i didnt measure the crank when i chucked in the std bearings and thats the only problem it could be. the engine was fully acid bathed all plugs and gaskets removed and the engine was repainted.

well whats happened in the last few months is that car has been sitting out side in the elements with the bonnet off with , the engine now looks like sumone has dumped in out in the paddock. they havent worked on it for over a month and over the past week i have been goin there every second day to put the pressure on.

two weeks ago on the friday i went in with my dad and they said the mechanic thats been working on it was away on holiday (fair enough), and he said when he comes back on the monday he is goin to get him to rip out the engine and to check the crank. tuesday to have the sump off and by the wednesday we would know what was goin on.
Went in on the thursday, nothing was done and the head mech/owner said they had made provisions to do it friday arvo, i went in late on friday arvo saw the car sitting where its always been sitting for the last few months un touched. saturday they still havent touched it.

I have been paying them cash in hand 400 for the box, and over 1600 in cash for labour so far. where do i stand with them? they they have to make the engine look like what it was when it went into them?, when they keep shrugging me off saying what i want to hear and going against it rar rar rar ...
whats my legal options if i have any? any good advice on what i should do next would be much appreiated. i dont hate these mechanics as they have provided the best service of any of the locals previously so yeah

I'd be contacting consumer affairs and let them know at the mech shop that youve had enough of the run around - they've made your engine look like pooh and you have now been without your car for way too long.

Consumer affairs may be your best option. Go visit the mechanics and say you are off the see the consumer affairs mob - see what action takes place then.

Good on ya mum for lending you a car - I'd put a curfew on you too.

I'd hit em up for a reduction on the bill for half that money too.

I'd be more worried about being on ice then the engine, go to rehab.
