Ok lads she's 2 cylinders short of an ecotec, but our '91 holden nova stopped quite abruptley down the main street, turns out that the timing belt snapped due to the owner before us not changing it...
She's got no compression what-so-ever, and we're just wondering if the car's going to be alright?
Anyone got any good news for me?
It will have no compression with the belt broken. I'm not sure if those motors are free spinning. Worst case will be that it has also bent a valve stem and the head will have to come off.
The info. is in a Rellm book covering that model or sometimes the belt manufacturers list it in their catalogues.
Lesson learned I guess, that the timing belt should be changed first thing when you buy a car where you can't be sure of its service history.
turns out it has a non-interference engine which pretty much means it's fine. new timing belt is $120 + labour to put it in is about $200, so the parents are going to send it to car heaven. Such a waste.
but even if it didnt snap, it would have needed changing anyways. so why not just fix it if it's fine?
wow $200 good value for swapping it over FWd timing belts are a Pita as theres no room

wouldn't it be cheaper to fix it than buying a new car?? Unless your not getting another car.
they're argument is that its an old car, and its probably going to start going down hill quite quickly.
Wreckers said they'd give us $200 for it..
spend the $200, probably get a grand for it.
That's the plan. The brother does auto and has changed a few timing belts - it's $120 and a lollypop as bribery - which even i'm happy to lash out and pay for.
Depends on what the rest of the car is like I guess. The price for the belt seems a bit high though. I would think <$50 is more like it. Were it to be fixed it would be worth looking around for a better price. Some bearing supply houses sell automotive belts.
Yeah, PITA but some are easier than others. I think there is an engine mount that has to come off on the Nova.
She's got 5 months rego left on it. Dad says $400...
tenterfield - just shy of the NSW/QLD border
Sorry kids, the father already towed it up to the local wrecking guy and sold it for a whole $200, with my new $99 cd player in it..
Now he's trying to get rid of my barina too..
GEE that was quick you could of made 400 i was only like 2hrs away and my GF needs a small car to drive around in BUGGER!!!!!!!!!!!!
Info on Barina HMMMMMMMM![]()
Its only a corolla with a holden badge...is like about $30 for a belt from supercheap and under 2hrs to replace at home....sounds like you's got ripped...
