Default Who works in Earth Moving/Excavation?

Interested in getting into it as a career. Obviously need to get the appropriate loader tickets etc. Which ones exactly?

What are the actual job opportunities in this field? Do you work for a contracting firm, doing things like digging for foundations?
Or I suppose your own business, specialising in one area?
    Good job, good pay?

I have a fair bit of experience using a 14 and 3 ton hymac, aswell as JCB front end loaders. Also back hoes and other earth moving/heavy machinery. Enjoyed doing this work, so thinking about careers that could go with it.

I'm not in the industry, but one of my good mates is. He does VERY well out of it, but the downside is that he spends alot of time living away from home where the work is.

which tickets you get would be governed by which area of construction you want to get into, eg if you wanna do civil work you'd get (for example) bobcat, tipper, excavator
but if you wanted commercial or roads you're get the big stuff, loaders, dozers, graders etc

Depends on experience/references to whether you need any tickets. I just have a blue/safety card. None of us working in the quarry have any tickets, we got hired on experience alone (1 week trail). Heaps of options out there from doing house pads to highways depending on what machine your prefer.

Over here work is starting to die off, so spending more time in the office then on machines, so harder to find jobs.

I've worked in the industry for 10 years and help run the family buisness. These are the tickets/licenses that i have: Excavator, front end loader, skid steer loader, backhoe, heavy combination licence, certified pilot vehicle licence, certified traffic controller, red card training and dump truck.
I manage our quarry atm so quite busy. Money depends on where you are and what you're doing. FNQ is a well paying area, my cousin is on $30 per hour min. up there. I've earnt as much as $45 per hour on some jobs so it can pay well. If you have any questions shoot me apm and i'll see if i can help.

Cost much to do the tickets, how long does it take?
So how did you get into the business?
Do you normally see jobs advertised wanting machinery operators for quarries or?
Also I presumed it is the same for getting into a contracting business that does road works etc?
    Thanks mate

Price depends on the ticket. Most heavy plant tickets can be done in a couple of hours so cost is around the $145 (last time i got one) Red card or similar training is a daily course and is probably double that.
We have a family buisness so it was probably always going to be my line of work but i did do retail for 5 years prior to taking it on, definately no regrets there!
I find that most of our employees are word of mouth mate, doesn't hurt to ring a few mobs and put forward your interest. The way i do it is i get a guy and trial them out for a few weeks to see if they're any good!
We cover road works, but we supply the materials for road buliding and do some civil construction. We don't actually build roads, contract that out to someone else.
    Where are you located?
