    Default Commodore goes 5-star

VE Omega's now score a 5-star ANCAP rating, but higher specs and HSV's miss out for now.

The Holden Commodore has finally achieved a five-star safety rating matching its rival Ford Falcon for occupant protection according to the Australasian New Car Assessment Program.

But in a twist the maximum five-star ANCAP rating only applies to the base model Omega in the six-model Commodore line up. And it only applies to vehicles built from October.

Even the luxury Statesman and Caprice models - selling for up to $86,330 in HSV guise - achieve only a four-star rating.

That's because Holden chose to fit an extra safety feature to the volume-selling Commodore Omega - the model that's aimed at safety conscious fleet buyers - before rolling it out on the more expensive sports and luxury models from the middle of 2009...

Well how is the MY09 Omega any different from any other VE in regards to crash safety? Strange.

The reason only the Omega gets it is due to a passenger seat belt reminder.

What a load of crap though that a bloody warning chime is the difference between a 4 star and a 5 star safety rating.

Yeah it's pretty silly, still at least you know if you're driving a VE you've essentially got a 5-star car there (so long as you and your passengers buckle up!)

Plus they say they'll put the chime in all the models by mid-09.

Poor old Aurion is the only major large car behind the game now.

Ohh but then I'll loose a safety star! Lol.

Nah, it's a good thing, it's only rarely it ****es me off. There aren't many occasions when the car needs to be running that you should have your belt off anyway.

Just do what forklift drivers do, plug the belt in, and sit on top of it whilst you do what you have to. Then when your ready to go, put it on normally.

Pretty sure they added the seatbelt warning based on whether someone is in a seat or not. i.e. If there is someone in a seat without a belt, it chimes.

Because the standard driver's seat belt plugin reminder has been around since the well before the VE.

Go mad at ANDCAP (or whatevery they are called) for the chime thing, not Holden. I personally hate the things and wish I could turn it off.

I have a GREAT idea which completely negates ANY safety rating on any car!!!

    Don't crash.

I like you theory. Remove every driver other than myself, and that would be the problem solved.

I feel the same way .

I learned a long time ago that not only do I have to drive to protect myself from others, but I also need to protect others from themselves. So far, so good .

Good news, This does prove it was pretty safe to start with. But f they had done this back in 2006. The competition would be on the back foot.. They were a little slow doing this even if it crashes good as 4 star.

The biggest change to the car is the steering column. Atleast your upper and lower parts of the legs will be safer in an accident now.

By the sounds of it if I slap some foam on the bottom of my column and install a few more bleepers in my car, I'll be on the way to a 5-star rating

Yes it does sound like that... Goes to show their system isn't right on the mark for scoring.

Hehe, all that said though people do report that it's pretty hard to score a 5-star rating, and I'm glad it's hard because it something to push the manufacturers into making safer cars.

    I'm glad also..

Be nice though if they could score more on the body structure and leave the bonus points for chimes lol out of the overall scoring.. Still funny how they pretty much said the chime gave them 5 stars.. You hear that and think it's easy.. But as you said it's really not easy at all.

Though i would like to know what a VT Berlina with 4 airbags traction and abs would go in the score.
