Im getting bloody annoyed at smokers and their cigarette breaks.

How is it a non-smoker such as myself only gets a 20 minute break on an 8 hour shift which I never even get, but people that smoke seem to get triple that. One guy at work takes 3 cigarette breaks on a 3 hour shift, and you're not even meant to have a break at all on a 3 hour shift. God knows how many he takes on an 8 hour shift.

This happens at alot of workplaces and it's b/s. If you smoke you should grow some balls and go 8 hours without one.

I've heard of African armies where if you don't smoke, you don't get a break. So everyone takes up smoking. If you can't beat em, join em.

Short of that, there's not much you can do. Work places are gradually becoming less smoker friendly, especially the lower level kind of jobs. Either push management or go with the smokers on their breaks.

Don't get too worked up about it, because you'll have the last laugh.

Ha when everyone starting doing this at my old job i "took up smoking". Just make sure you go "smoke" when noone is out there.

I can understand why people would be urinated off.

If people take smoke breaks on the hour, that means 5 minutes or 45minutes per day. That's not even taking into account the time taken to get down the elevator, scan in and out or even the mental upload of starting and stopping the task (destroying the flow). There are a few journals which estimate the value of the smoko to be in the gazillions.

Smokers make a choice to defile their bodies and fair enough because it's legal. But extending smokers special treatment that non-smokers do not get is discrimination.

I'd love to see a workplace where drinkers are allowed to come in a few hours late on Mondays due to hangovers from excessive drinking. Yet the teetotalers are made to come in on time.

Smoking should be banned during company hours, unless it's a job where neither productivity nor other people are affected by it.

As Stealthy said, copy the smokers when they take their breaks, and if anyone says anything, tell them it's bloody discriminatory, tell them smokers get edgy if they can't have a smoke every hour, and you get edgy if you don't get some natural light and fresh air every hour.

The last place I worked at allowed three "smoke breaks" per day, per employee, in addition to morning tea and lunch. Similarly, all employees who didn't smoke were entitled to three "tea breaks" where they could leave their desks, make a cuppa, and read the paper for ten minutes. All you had to do was report to your superior before and after your break so they could keep track of you.

Why should it be made illegal? If an employer allows it so be it. However, if they ban smoking, I would also suggest they ban getting coffee, tea, water, going to the toilet etc unless it is on specified break times. I know what your saying, I just do not agree with it. I have seen people who smoke spend 2 hours a day outside, yet spend 7 hours doing more work than those who stay in all day.

Nah its not illegal, a 20 minute paid break is all they are legally required to give.

The only reason management allow it, is because both the managers smoke as well and they take as many smoke breaks as anyone

Im just venting more than complaining, im not trying to change whats happening at my work because as I said it happens in alot of workplaces.
